The Viking Earl Magnus is one of the most celebrated characters in the history of the Orkney Islands. The magnificent Cathedral in the heart of Kirkwall (the northernmost in the UK) bears his name and is a strikingly beautiful tribute to him. This bottle is a tribute to the old Gordon & MacPhail and distillery bottling which used to bear the image of Earl Magnus. The whisky is a 15 year old Highland Park composed primarily of whiskies from the early 1990s. 5976 bottles have been released at a cask strength of 52.6%. Only 72 are coming into Alberta an KWM is getting 36 of them. This whisky is strictly limited to 2 bottles per customer.

My tasting note: Nose: fresh mown grass and soft citrussy fruit notes like dried orange and grapefruit juice, edgeless smoke and damp sea breeze; Palate: starts softly sweet and stays clean with some developing sherry, spice and peat notes, and the salty smoke is never far off;warming with sweet tobacco, licorice and leather; Finish: long, full and rich with thick tarry peat and burnt spices.

My Tasting Note: Nose: rich cocoa notes, cinnamon, ginger, clove and maple with doughy vanilla; Palate: sweet, sour and musty to start, the whisky shows lots of fruity milk chocolate notes as it develops as well as a nutty backbone, it is viscous and coating with late honey and marmalade notes; Finish: dry and leathery with a touch of spice and hints of the chocolate and sweet fruity notes that ruled the palate.
