The Rottensteiner family is one of the oldest wine-growing families in South Tyrol/Alto Adige region. Their winemaking history began many generations ago, here where the vines grow on the red rock, the porphyry, typical of this region. Their surname is also the namesake of the red rock commonly found in the region's soils.. Today, Toni and Hannes (father and son), jointly conduct the affairs of the winery, a family affair to be sure. The white wines from this estate are exceptional, their Pinot Gris and Pinot Bianco have more in common with the best examples from Alsace with their complex array of fruits and minerals.

This winery begins with a tale of two brothers - Walter and Antonio Mastroberardino -who parted ways, with Antonio acquiring the winery and Walter acquiring the vineyards (renamed as Terradora). The Terredora di Paolo estate is located on the hills of Irpinia surrounding the valleys of the Sabato and Calore rivers. With about 180 hectares of vineyards, they rank among the most prestigious producers in Southern Italy. The South of Italy is one of the most interesting wine areas in the country and Campania, and especially the Irpinia region, produces wines from native grape varieties such as Aglianico, Fiano, Greco, Piedirosso and Falanghina, all of which are brimming with personality. Aglianico has been called the Barolo of the South for its power and its ability to age for many years. The flavours are classic, showing notes of blackcurrants, chocolate, dried figs and toasted almonds. It has plenty of life left, but it is hard to resist just now. Try it with dark chocolate desserts or ripe blue cheese such as Roquefort.

Tokaj Classic was founded by a group of classical musicians who were well traveled and had tasted a variety of wines from different countries before coming to the unanimous conclusion that Tokaj was a diamond in the rough, just waiting to be polished. In the historic village of Mád, the musicians refurbished an old estate and acquired vineyards in the historical prime locations of Királyhegy (King’s Mountain), and Betsek, formerly owned by the Hungarian nobility. It was a region with a wine growing history dating back over 400 years. The musicians found that handling grapes and wine is comparable to teaching students of music. Just as musical talent in students is recognized and promoted, so is the redundant growth of grapes contained and shaped, their character noted. As in music, attention is paid to the slightest detail, and new interpretations are always sought. Each vintage becomes its own composition, maintaining its individual character.

Something magical happened when Derek Rohlffs decided to veer onto a dirt road in the middle of nowhere. In a far-flung vineyard with grazing sheep, he happened upon the perfect place to grow Pinot Noir that would push boundaries and defy expectations. The 2022 Outlier Pinot Noir is a delicious wine produced from a single, organically farmed vineyard in the upper reaches of Spring Valley, a narrow ravine just east of Clear Lake. The cool micro-climate at Long Valley Ranch allows for the slow ripening that is so critically important when it comes to producing a balanced Pinot Noir.
This outlying CCOF-certified vineyard is the only one for miles around. A mix of Pinot Noir vines was established in 2015, including Dijon clones 114, 115, 667, 777, and 943. Long Valley Ranch is off the beaten path but the 15-kilometre drive up the dirt road leading to the vineyard is worth it—and then some!

In our stable of wines exclusive to KWM, Poggio Al Sole is like a favourite child; no one wants to admit they have one but secretly loves one just a little bit more. Poggio al Sole lies in the heart of Tuscany, in the bucolic countryside between Florence and Siena, between Tavarnelle Val di Pesa and Greve in Chianti. Documents in the archives of the nearby ancient abbey of Badia a Passignano testify to the claim that wine and olive oil were produced on this estate as early as the 12th century. Giovanni and Kathrin Davaz are the proprietors of Poggio al Sole, tending approximately 18 hectares of vineyards. The vines face south-east to south-west and are between 320 and 480 metres above sea level. Yields are kept low to improve quality, and the vineyards are certified organic.
