It all started in the middle of the nineteenth century when French negociants visited the Rioja region to find alternative sources of quality grapes to transform into wine, since the phylloxera epidemic had decimated their vineyards. The founder, Don Rafael López de Heredia y Landeta, a knowledgeable and enthusiastic student in the art of wine making, followed closely in their footsteps.
Don Rafael fell in love with the region and especially the area around Haro, the mythical capital of the Rioja Alta region. He observed that there was a magical combination of soil and climate that would offer the perfect environment for producing wine that would eventually become world famous. Around 1877 he began the design and construction of the complex that is today known as the López de Heredia bodega (winery), the oldest in Haro and one of the first three bodegas in the Rioja region.

Noël Bulliat and his son Loïc run this family estate that covers 27 ha in 8 different appelations in the heart of the Beaujolais region. It began in 1978 when Noël bought 4 ha of Beaujolais Villages straight after graduating from viticultural school. The grapes are hand-picked and fermented with the whole clusters intact. They undergo a cold maceration to preserve aromatic profile before being moved to cement tanks for semi-carbonic maceration, lasting 10 to 12 days using indigenous yeasts. Jed Steele is a pioneer in California's wine world, starting his career in 1974 and striking out on his own in 1991, eventually opting to make his wines in Lake County (just north of Napa Valley) where vineyards were considerably more affordableSteele's Cuvee Zinfandel is made from grapes grown in Lake and Mendocino County. Steele Wines purchased this vineyard in Mendocino County from the Pacini family in 1998, but it was originally planted in 1940. While they have replaced some of the vines, many of the old vines still remain. They are dry-farmed due to their location and result in intensely flavoured wines. The ripe bramble fruit is accompanied by spice, cocoa and vanilla, bolstered by American oak. While it is full-bodied, the tannins are smooth and ripe.

In the 1920s, the Daddi family purchased the castle and its surroundings, and in their attentive care, it would remain for almost 100 years. Francesco Daddi took the reins of the family estate in 1997 and worked tirelessly at making incremental improvements, not the least of which was the return to the organic viticulture of his ancestors. He also worked closely with renowned architect Alessandro Loni Coppedè to restore crumbled portions of the castle and the gardens to their former glory. Francesco is mild-mannered and affable, the very definition of a gentleman. But he harbours a perfectionist streak that has led to world-class wine. The vineyards surround the Castello at altitudes ranging from 300 to 500 meters, with south and southwest exposure, and marl and chalk soils. They grow primarily Sangiovese, the most vital grape to Tuscany, along with small plots of other native varieties. Elvire, married to Léon Féraud was a winegrower and mother of four children. Paul, the youngest, worked the family vineyard since he was 14 years old. In 1964 he decided to produce his own wine and marketed 2,000 bottles a year. Laurence, the daughter of Paul & Odette returned to settle in Châteauneuf du Pape in 1987, having completed her wine studies and wine and spirits business school. She proposed to her parents to create an independent family estate of 5ha and registered the name Pegau.
