The Heartland story began in the late 1990s when winemaker Ben Glaetzer became excited about the outstanding quality of fruit being grown in some of South Australia’s lesser-known regions, in particular Langhorne Creek. He started a partnership that eventually grew Heartland into an award-winning winery. (Ben also makes his range of Glaetzer wines at this facility, most famously his Amon-ra Shiraz). The growing conditions in Langhorne Creek are predominantly shaped by the onshore southerly winds blowing directly from the Southern Ocean across Lake Alexandrina. 750 mlProduced from a small parcel of 2023 Vermentino fruit by winemaker Ben Glaetzer at Langhorne Creek, South Australia, every mouthful of this delicate wine is energizing and inviting. It tastes of a pink grapefruit core with hints of mango at the back while elderflower, lemon pith, white almond and freshly brewed camomile tea leap up on the nose. This is a classic drop to pair with any meal or savour its refreshing taste as is.

Torlesse takes its name from an early Canterbury resident, surveyor and farmer, Englishman Charles Torlesse. He gave his name to the Torlesse mountain range, which partly circles the Canterbury Plains, and was at one time the largest land owner and farmer in North Canterbury and the founder of the nearby town of Rangiora. Interestingly, Torlesse is also the name given to the underlying bedrock from which most New Zealand soils are derived. The Torlesse winery was built and opened in March 2000, but Torlesse has produced wines from 1991 onwards, making it one of the older wineries in Waipara. Most grapes are hand harvested, and the winemaking team is led by owners Ben & Pete Rayner, while Maggie Rayner leads the cellar door team. They have been cultivating and producing excellent wine for over 30 years.

Verdejo is effectively unique to Spain, and specifically to the Rueda region. It's dominated by citrus flavours that include lemon/lime and grapefruit, along a hint of salinity and a pleasant almond note that often develops after a few years in bottle. This one is aged on it's lees for 3 months, all in stainless steel tanks. It's a brilliant seafood wine, particularly with delicate white fish and the bivalve family (oysters, mussels, clams).

The Pita family has a long history in Spain's Rueda region, a DO dedicated solely to white wine. The dominant variety in the region is Verdejo, a grape that offers crisp citrusy white wines reminiscent of Sauvignon Blanc without the resounding grassiness. It has a generous mouthfeel with notes of tropical fruit, and apples, and is certified organic. It would go well with shellfish and other appetizers.
