The oldest vines, averaging 60 years of age, are the source for the flagship red, spending 24 months in French (80%) and American oak barrels, and another three years in bottle prior to release. It's a complex mix of exotic spice, dark red berries and vanilla with ripe, well-integrated tannins. Lamb and game meats come to mind and decanting is recommended. It is capable of another decade or so of age.

We are really excited about these wines, because one of the "Three Sisters", Rebecca Mikulic (nee Lawrence) used to work here at KWM. That and the wines are also delicious! Rebecca and her husband winemaker Matthew Mikulic grow grapes throughout the Okanagan, and have a winery on the Naramata Bench. This 100% Pinot Noir Rose was fermented in stainless steel tanks.

Meerendal Wine Estate dates back to 1702 and is home to some of the oldest plantings of Pinotage in the world, with some vines dating back to 1955. Pinotage is a genetic cross of Cinsault and Pinot Noir that has found a home in South Africa. The Sumoll grape varietal is difficult to grow but has a very alluring personality that rewards the careful patience of growers and drinkers alike. Sumoll was far more prevalent in the Penedes and the Catalonia region in the 1800s. However, many of the vineyards in the region were destroyed by phylloxera and little Sumoll was replanted afterwards. Today, the grape is making a slow but steady rise within the region as it becomes prized for its uniqueness and ties to the area.
