The Heartland story began in the late 1990’s when winemaker Ben Glaetzer (of Amon Ra fame) became excited about the outstanding quality of fruit being grown in some of South Australia’s lesser-known regions, in particular Langhorne Creek. Together with industry veterans Scott Collett, Grant Tilbrook and more recently, Nick Keukenmeester, they grew Heartland into an award-winning winery. It offers blackcurrant and berry fruits wrapped in a neat parcel of dried herbs, tomato bush and faint mintiness. A touch firmish in the mouth but the finish is long and seemingly endless.

Shiraz, Cabernet Sauvignon, and Dolcetto are blended together to create a bright yet full-bodied wine that is perfect for everyday occasions. Each variety is individually fermented on the skins for 5 days before it is pressed to enhance the aromatics while softening the naturally present tannins. Maturation in 2–3-year-old oak barrels rounds out the rich and savoury character of the Cabernet Sauvignon and Shiraz. Dolcetto and a splash of Lagrein add spiciness and vibrant tannins that complete the wine. Perfect for your Sunday night roast dinners, grilled dishes, cured meats, and aged cheeses.

Lagrein and Dolcetto are two Italian grapes that would never be blended together in Italy. When it came to the point where Australia was fighting for same-sex marriage, Heartland decided that with this untraditional blend, they would donate $1 from every bottle to help the LGBTQ community fight for equality. Only the finest Cabernet vineyards in Langhorne Creek contributed to Directors’ Cut. The old vine fruit is the cornerstone of this wine’s character. The fruit was harvested at night to retain freshness. Initial skin contact was followed by 7 days of cool fermentation with our Rhône isolate yeast and hand-plunging three times daily. Maturation then occurred in 75% new oak hogsheads for approximately 14 months. This bold Cabernet is perfect to pair with richer food; Think pot roast, meat pie, sausages and meatloaf.
