Cadenhead Small Batch Glentauchers 1990
$334.99
MAtured in a Bourbon Barrel and bottled at 54.4% after 27 years. Only a handful of bottles have come to Canada!
90pts Angus @WhiskyFun.org: "Colour: light gold. Nose: ahh, you just cannot beat a plain cask and time! This is a really lovely and elegant mix of beeswaxes, pollens, heather honey, tea biscuits, light olive oil, mushroom powder and earthen floored cellars. It also has this lean, waxy side to it that I associate as a very ‘Glentauchers’ thing. A few glazed and crystalised fruits as well. With water: opens beautifully. More towards canvas, hessian cloth, dunnage, clay and a little orange peel now. Mouth: Pow! Big, peppery, sappy, oily, waxy, surprisingly herbal and sooty! Really terrific delivery and evolution on the palate. Some earthy turmeric, ripe green fruits and spiced mead. With water: once again, water works wonders. Lots of nervous green, citrus and white fruits. Pears baked in honey, ripe banana, apple crumble with spiced custard and more supple waxiness. Really terrific. Finish: long, earthy, waxy, gently peppery and tingling. Lots of green apple, lemon peel, olive oil and a little camphor. Comments: I had it at 89 but water elevates it to a solid 90. A real gem of a Glentauchers!" SGP: 561 - 90 points.
Glenfarclas 105 - 22 year old
$204.99
A very limited special edition of the venerable Glenfarclas 105, released to mark the 50th Anniversary of the "105 Cask Strength", the first regularly available cask strength distillery bottling. Bottled after 22 years at 60% ABV like the regular 105. They achieve the 60% mark through the careful marriage of casks, and not by dilution! Only 3500 bottles were produced, and just a shade over 200 are coming to Canada!
Andrew's Tasting Note
Nose: sweet and nutty, rich sherry tones; musty oloroso, syrupy px and Eatmore candy bars; lots of chocolate and yogurt tones to the nose balancing out the decadent fruits and spices; cooked raisins and medjool dates drizzled in honey.
Palate: still sweet and very sherried with more prominent oak, leather, tobacco and especially spices; more Eatmore, dark chocolate espresso beans and salty Dutch licorice; the syrupy PX tones are still there as are the drier nutty Oloroso notes; the spices though seem to be the backbone ranging from Candied ginger to cloves baked with honey.
Finish: medium in body and length the whisky is coating and decadent with fading spices, chocolate, dark fruits and chocolate.
Comment: very well balanced for its strength, and richly sherried; only very small quantities have come into Alberta, and they won't last long!" - $205
