Andrew's Tasting Note
Nose: honeyed with bacon wrapped scallops cooked in butter; firm smoke with strawberry and rhubarb jams; creamy and orangey, big juicy malt with some lovely citrus notes.
Palate: sweet, very honeyed and creamy and then the fragrant smoke drifts in coating the mouth with salt, peat and juicy malt; more strawberry and rhubarb jam but also Moroccan marmalade and quince paste; more seafood tones: bacon wrapped scallops cooked in butter with brown sugar.
Finish: big and long; stays sweet and creamy with clean peat smoke and more bacon wrapped scallops.
Comment: for such a heavily peated malt, I can believe how fresh, sweet and fruity it is; this is top of the mountain on a sunny winter day whisky!"
Producer Tasting Note
Nose: cured meat aromas mingle with vanilla and tropical fruit notes.
Palate: sweet with pear, ripe banana and hints of toasted oak followed by a peat smoke edge.
Finish: long with lingering bonfire embers.
About Caol Ila (Courtesy Gordon & MacPhail):"Caol IIa is a lively whisky, both peaty and full of flavour, without being as intense as its more famous counterparts. Its availability is limited, and with a name that is difficult to pronounce, Caol Ila has remained an almost secret Islay malt. The name, - pronounced 'culleela', is gaelic for 'Sound of Islay'. The distillery is appropriately hidden in a cove near Port Askaig, overlooking the Sound of Islay, across which the ferry chugs to the nearby island of Jura."

This 19 year old Arran is exclusive to KWM in Calgary, bottled at 50% from a Refill Hogshead (HL11885), a total of 288 bottles were produced with just 30 coming to Calgary. Distilled September 1996 and bottled: September 2015.
Andrew's Tasting Note
Nose: creamy, floral and honeyed; loads of melon, fresh picked oranges and grapefruits; Belgian waffles with whipped topping; some tangy jammy notes too and English marmalade.
Palate: very creamy, and coating with loads of vanilla: custard and white chocolate; still jammy, more English marmalade and dulce de leche; more melon, orange, grapefruit and Belgian waffles with whipped topping.
Finish: long and ethereal, still creamy, delicately floral and decadent; loads more whipped topping right through the finish and delicate fruits.
Comment: it is hard to screw up an Arran, especially in the American oak and this one is beautiful; one of the oldest Arrans we've ever seen!
Producer Tasting Note
Nose: sweet vanilla custard, prunes, rhubarb and sulphur.
Palate: sweet creamy vanilla, stewed rhubarb and fruit salad.
Finish: long, lingering, slightly dry with a fruity aftertaste.

Panel's tasting note: "The aromas neat were like reading the dessert menu in a restaurant. Sticky toffee pudding, salty caramel bread and butter pudding, caramelized bananas, glace cherry cake, and orange and lemon drizzle loaf. We needed to take a sip to decide; sweet and spicy on the tongue. Flavours of dark fruits, dark bitter chocolate and dark spiced rum all put together in one delicious chocolate cake cookie – can I have one please! With a drop of water, white chocolate-coated green grapes and a ginger marzipan cake with candied citrus peel, whilst in the taste a fruit and vegetable orange carrot smoothie."
