"Quinta da Pedra Escrita estate is located in Freixo de Numão - Douro Superior, with an average altitude of 575 meters. The windy and dry soils of the Estate are predominantly of granite, sandy and very poor in nutrients. Here I grew my first vineyards, always believing that the granite soils give us wines with highly complex aromas and great longevity, like in the old times."

Ortega Rioja Rosado

Their story began with Quintín Ortega in 1986. A humble figure with some good ideas and the determination to carry them out, he decides to plant vines and start what is now the winery, led by his great-grandson, Carmelo Ortega. In the 90s, Carmelo established the winery headquarters in an old house that served as a winery for many years, now a site where an enotourism project is being developed to encourage tourism in the region. Their property covers approximately 700 hectares of scrubland, almond fields and vineyards, all of which are sheltered by the nearby mountains, which create climatic conditions that include a reduced risk of frost and a controlled level of humidity in the summer. This set of features and factors, together with the characteristics of the soil (pebbles, low organic matter), creates a unique grape-growing microcosm, which has allowed them to develop the “village wine” style they are looking for to define the wines of Tudelilla (the village where they are situated in the heart of the Rioja Baja region).. A blend of 90% Garnacha and 10% Viura, this wine has ripe and floral notes, with hints of tropical fruit (grapefruit, passion fruit and orange peel). Serve as an aperitif or cold dishes.

The fruit was harvested at night to retain freshness. Initial skin contact was followed by 7 days of cool fermentation with our Rhône isolate yeast and hand-plunging three times daily. A blend of Negroamaro (80%) and Malvasia Nera, picked from vines 15 to 20 years old. The wine spends between four and six months maturing in French oak prior to bottling. Close to ten years on since the grapes were picked, the wine is currently showing wonderful lavender, cherry and raspberry notes along with integrated acidity and minerality. Getting a decade-old wine that drinks this well at this price is impressive and as such it remains one of the great bargains in Italy's vast wine realm. It would pair nicely with lasagna or roast chicken.
About The Winery

This is a beautiful Mencía that comes from 70 to 90-year-old vines from the villages of Cacabelos, Vilafranca del Bierzo and Toral de los Vados, all in the Bierrzo region of Spain. The wine is fermented using ambient yeast fermentation then left to age for nine months in French and American oak barrels. It's then aged another 6 months in barrel before it is finally released. Mencia is grape that was overlooked outside of Spain but it's gaining a loyal following for its calling card of flowery aromas complimented by flavours that include strawberry, raspberry, black licorice, pomegranate and cherry. It can produce light, almost Pinot Noir of Gamay-like wines but this one is considerably more substantial, ideal with grilled meats.
