Story by: Robyn & Ron
... The air was already thin at 16,018 feet, but we were still hungry for more. I was in Ecuador with my dad, the kind of travel partner who never says no to a challenge. Our first summit attempt was Cotopaxi, a volcano so massive and surreal it felt like we were hiking into a painting. Most people might rest after something like that. But three days later, there we were again, lacing our boots for Chimborazo. It was brutal. Every breath felt earned. But hiking alongside my dad, we pushed past 17,000 vertical feet, fueled by stubbornness, awe, and the kind of bond that only deepens above the clouds...."

Meyer Chardonnay

Meyer is one of BC’s top wineries, focusing on small premium Chardonnay and Pinot Noir. Each wine reflects the single vineyard of its origin, the soil, the meso-climate, the aspect and the people that hand tend the vines. All wines are Hand-harvested and hand-crafted, with great attention to detail and minimal winemaking intervention. Meyer Family Vineyards wines are produced from two main vineyards, the 1.62-hectare “Old Main Road” vineyard on the Naramata Bench and the 6.9-hectare “McLean Creek Road” vineyard in Okanagan Falls. The McLean Creek spends 11 months in French oak (22% new). Easily one of the best Chardonnays produced in Canada.
Redstone Gamay
$28.99
Morey Tawse, a financier by trade – is the vice president and co-founder of First National, the country’s largest non-bank mortgage lender- as well as a lifelong lover of wine, Moray Tawse could also be called a terroir collector.
After realizing the potential of winemaking in Niagara, Moray purchased his first vineyard in 2001. In 2005 he opened Tawse, the winery that bears his family name. He then secured vineyards in his beloved Burgundy and his project with famed winemaker Pascal Marchand, Marchand Tawse was born. Redstone is the newest addition to his portfolio and his second project on the Escarpment. “When you get an opportunity to get a terroir where the wine’s great, you buy another vineyard! ”, he confesses. When the former Thomas and Vaughan property came up for sale in 2009, it was an opportunity he simply couldn’t pass up.
The vineyard, which is ideally suited to maturing late-ripening Bordeaux-varietals, was originally intended to supplement the Tawse portfolio. However, when the first wines were made in 2010, they showed such a different character and terroir signature that Moray decided that they deserved their own home. So the idea of Redstone was born.
Vineland Estates Cabernet Franc
$24.99
Why call a cab when you can have a Cab Franc. Okay, we're fooling around with a play on words here because this Canadian red is worth a ride. It's a little lighter than a Cabernet Sauvignon but with just as much finesse. Medium-bodied and smooth with raspberry aromas and flavors of sweet roasted bell pepper and a hint of smokiness. Nice oak and a long, long finish. Great with roast lamb.
