As a farmer, Luigi Einaudi displayed intelligence and far-sightedness. When he used rooted grafts on American rootstock to combat phylloxera, he brought modern viticulture to the Langhe. He decided in 1915 to create a cellar to produce and bottle wine, rather than just selling the grapes. He at once began to buy vineyards that enjoyed a particular position, exposure and soil quality in order to produce the best wines. Today, it is Matteo Sardagna Einaudi, Paola’s son, who is at the helm of the company, and they produce some of most exsquisite examples of Barolo, Barbaresco, and Dolcetto in Piedmont.

The seed for a career in wine was planted squarely in the Bourbon Whiskey country of Lexington, Kentucky. While waiting tables to put himself through school, Ken was exposed to fine wines from regions around the world. The passion became avocation when Ken left the Bluegrass State to attend enology and viticulture classes at UC Davis. Eight years were spent winemaking for Ventana Vineyards, Chalone and Talbott Vineyards in Monterey County on California’s central coast. Friends from the Willamette Valley piqued Ken’s interest in the region when they would visit, and a trip to the Dundee Hills in 1976 convinced him that this was where the finest Pinot noir in North America was being grown. The Leitz EINS-ZWEI-ZERO offers an appealing character with fresh notes of lime and citrus, accompanied by little hints of red apples on an underlying mineral base. The finish is slightly off-dry and relatively long. As we all know, like fat, alcohol is a transporter of flavor, and without it, there needs to be something else to carry those flavors. Residual sugar does the work for this stunning Riesling, though the sugar is nearly eaten up by acidity. It retains its wine-like aromas: fresh apples, orange and tarragon.

The Leitz EINS-ZWEI-ZERO ROSÉ shows fresh notes of pale strawberries, raspberry and citrus in the nose; slight hints of fresh grapefruit and an underlying mineral base. The finish is (almost) dry and relatively long. We made this Rosé from delicious base wines, which are blended to create a maximum of (sober) taste. Of course, an alcohol-free wine never will give the same depth, structure, and weight as a wine with alcohol, but this is extremely close to it and it is simply an alcohol-free wine tasting wine. Impressive.
