We are getting both 700ml and 200ml bottles of this rare dram. I first tried it at the Nth Whisky Festival in Vegas, it is light and fresh, shockingly so for a whisky which has spent 70 years in a single First Fill Sherry Butt. The angels were kind with this one, somehow the cask retained 45.9% strength. The packaging is stunning; it has been bottled in a bespoke tear shaped crystal decanter with sterling silver stopper and base. The box is bespoke made of Scottish Elm and hand crafted in Scotland. My Tasting Note: Nose: peaches and cream, mulled fruits, hard candies and fruit leather with some deft Christmas Cake notes; assorted jujubes, new leather sofa, and something vaguely smoky; Palate: soft and delicate, some delicate smoky notes, more peaches and cream and warming-buttery fruit; becomes richer with brown sugar and spices: cinnamon, cardamom, clove and ginger; leather and tobacco notes; there are so many layers to this whisky: citrus, smoke, soft coating oils and much, much, more; nutty tones and vanilla; Finish: long and warming, sweet with subtle spice and nutty oak, my palate is moist, damp and coated with soft oils.

Panel's Tasting Note: "To start the neat nose is melted brown sugar in butter followed by a surprisingly clean wood smoke, like a distant Arbroath smoke house. In addition we get antiseptic notes like germolene or a lemon scented savlon next to aromas of red clay in a pottery. To taste it feels like being in a sauna, sitting on the highest bench during an ‘Aufguss’ whilst eating wasabi. With the addition of water a foamed neoprene wetsuit turning quickly into salty butter on burnt toast. With time shellfish aromas of mussels and scallops develop. To taste, now intense sweet like a croissant with butter but also savoury bacon notes and fragrant incense sticks of sandalwood in the finish."

Distillery's Tasting Note: "The nose opens with an appealing rich and "darkly" spiced character carrying a fresh leather & ground nuts (hazelnuts?) quality. The palate is mouth coatingly spiced with soft wood tones and runs to black cherries in alcohol and dark chocolate. The finish is long, gently oaked, and remains warmingly spiced with a "candied ginger coated in (more) dark chocolate"-style."

My Tasting Note: Nose: very herbal with fresh green grass, salty and medicinal notes, cured fish and clean smoke; shortbread with granular sugar topping, candied lemon, something a little rubbery and burning grass; steamed mussels in broth, Salt n Vinegar chips and rubber tubing; Palate: a little ashy with clean burning wood smoke, liquid honey and vanilla; the palate shows more steamed mussels in a very salty broth with a sweet sugary backbone that never really disappears; the whisky has an oily-mouth-coating character and some balancing acidity; Finish: fine cigar tobacco, gently peat oils and sweet toasted oak, with clove and more clean wood smoke.

This is a limited release of Chichibu Whisky from Japan. The whisky was distilled in 2009 with malt produced to specifications provided by Ichiro Akuto while on a trip to England to learn the are of floor malting. Bottled at 50.5%, 8800 bottles were produced. Just a couple of dozen found their way to Canada, exclusively to KWM.
