Bottled in 2014 this limited edition release of anCnoc from Knockdhu distillery filled into three casks in 1975. The whisky is a product of both Spanish and American oak bottled at 44.2%. 

Andrew's Tasting Note

Nose: right off the bat it is tropical, dark fruits, soft leather, white chocolate and Glosset Raisins; dried apple and orange peels with some soft floral notes; it has the classic antique elements of an older sherried whisky.

Palate: very fruity with more tropical fruit: mango, papaya and melons, some raisin and darker fruits emerge; the whisky has notes of chocolate and dark spices like clove and anise but underneath there is a base of creamy vanilla and honey; there are also leathery, nutty and earthy tones but it is the fruits and chocolate that reign.

Finish: soft, medium long and still very fruity; elegant.

Distiller's Tasting Note

Nose: Waves of spicy dried fruit and creamy vanilla sweetness are accentuated by orange peel, green apple freshness and just a hint of cut flowers.

Taste: Full-bodied, intense and complex. Fruit cake, sticky toffee and seasoned leather are followed by signature notes of honey and lemons, leading eventually to a long, mouth-watering finish full of spice and sweetness.

Profile: "Peated."

Panel's Tasting Note: "The nose conjured up fishing village scenes – boat sheds, smoke houses, sea air, tarry ropes, puffer boats, lobster pots, seaweed and sea-food barbecues; also lavender and carbolic. The palate was masculine and tongue-roasting (pleasantly so) with smoke, tarry driftwood, brine, treacle, vanilla, honey-roasted pork, smoky bacon and chili. The reduced nose discovered swimming pools, coal fires, fish boxes on a bonfire, new car tires and oysters. Even in reduction, the palate was still big, but very enjoyable – mouth-tingling spices, salt and pepper, citric smoke, grapefruit on prawn cocktail and hints of leather in the finish. We thought it very ‘sound’."

Drinking Tip: "Take a sip before jumping into the ocean - and a good mouthful after coming out."

Royal Brackla is one of only two distilleries given the prefix "Royal", and the first in Scotland to ever receive a Royal Warrant. Only 3 have ever been so honoured. The distillery was founded in Nairn in 1812. 

Andrew's Tasting Note

Nose: silky, seductive, soft and creamy ; very floral to start, lots of white fruit: apple and pear, with a touch of orange and honey; spices in the background with some chewy malt.

Palate: bigger than expected, amazingly creamy, lots of fruits: white, citric and tropical; the whisky has some weight to it, clotted cream, melted vanilla ice cream and honey; the spices and floral notes show up late to the party with chewy malt.

Finish: spicy, toasty and coating with more creamy vanilla, honey and fruits slowly fading out.

Comment: very mature for a whisky of just 16 years!

JUICY, SALTY AND SOOTY

Flavour profile:  Heavily peated

Panel's tasting note:  "Many would say this is the most pungent of the Islay malts, and certainly this cask supports the claim. Carbolic and Coal Tar soap, road tar and soot are the first notes, backed more subtly by Brazil nuts, raw monkey nuts and pine nuts, then tools in a garden shed, ‘including lawnmower and grubby dungarees.' The taste is very sweet, salty and very smoky: ‘smoked hot-dog, with barbecue sauce,' evolving into oysters with clamato sauce. More medicinal with water (foot baths, wet suits and rubber dinghies); not quite so sweet to taste and less salty, but still bags of sooty smoke."

Profile: "Deep, rich & dried fruits."

Panel's Tasting Note: "We found an amazingly complex nose – interesting sweetness (salted caramel, barley sugars, ginger snaps, melted chocolate) blended beautifully with laurel hedges, lacquered wood, dunnage warehouses, porridge, roasted hazelnuts, cherries and cigarette packets. The palate was drying, spicy, sweet and perfumed – we identified dark chocolate, fig rolls, clove, cinnamon and ginger spice, orange peel, Night Nurse cold medicine, tobacco, tonka beans and cooked ham – definitely interesting; we wanted more. The reduced nose was slightly more herbal (camomile, sage, eucalyptus) while the palate seemed sweeter, but still with miniscule piranhas of warm spice nipping at our tongues. The distillery is located in the Japanese Alps."

An insanely floral 12 year old Speysider matured 12 years in a 1st fill barrel and bottled at 55.8%

Flavour profile:  Spicy & sweet

Panel's tasting note: "Our noses were tickled by pepper, mustard, straw mats and sawdust, but it settled to jellied fruits, blackcurrant chews, orange jelly, fruity toffee, tinned pineapple and syrup sponge with custard. With water, those black pepper clouds parted and the sun shone on ripened orchard fruits (apple, pear, peach, apricot, cherry). The palate offered a warm peppery tingle, hinting at nutmeg and chili; we also found honey, toffee, fruit pastilles, blackcurrant, lemon, ice lolly sticks and some biscuit-y dryness. In reduction, fruits of the forest were balanced nicely by hints of humbug, pepper, liquorice, leather and tea."

Drinking tip: "A holiday dram - but not abroad and not four star - more like camping or RVing (unmatchablejoys and interesting challenges)"

Panel's tasting note: "This had all the makings of a great feast of prosciutto ham, sundried tomatoes, roasted fish skins, sushi and brown sauce. A leather jacket stuffed into a canvas bag and a pouch of pipe tobacco. A damp forest with recently burnt heather and a shale beach. Much discussion ensued on the topic of ham - honey glazed or German peppered? We were all in agreement that it had delicious foodie characteristics in a warm plastic box. Lavender lip balm and orange peel were detectable above the blast of tar, sea spray, incense sticks and wet burlap."
