ALL DAY AMERICAN BREAKFAST: A really punchy grain whisky at 64.6% after maturing 19 years in a Refill ExBourbon Hogshead. "The taste is sweet and spicy - sugar on caraway bread.

Panel's Tasting Note: "This sample, from the most northerly grain distillery, had the Panel very excited. On the nose beat, beeswax, tangerines, mandarins, toffee popcorn, rich honey, vanilla, orange oil, eucalyptus, cardamom and fennel seeds. The taste is sweet and spicy - sugar on caraway bread.Then turning waxy, like being in a room with children candle dipping and the aroma of sap and resin from a freshly cut Christmas tree. With water, aromas of steamed orange pudding, burnt toffee, vanilla cake batter, fluffy American pancakes with maple syrup and eggs sunny side-up appear. The taste is velvety smooth, orange and vanilla oil,cooked chestnuts, nut brittle and cornbread. Slightly minty with a spicy edge of a Jalapeno pepper in the finish."

DAPPER DAN MEETS HOLLY HUNTER: This 22 year old Refill Ex-Bourbon Barrel matured Speysider yielded just 130 bottles. ""Funny how old Speysides can start on the nose like paint before gliding effortlessly into sensual exotic fruits."

Panel's Tasting Note: ""Funny how old Speysides can start on the nose like paint before gliding effortlessly into sensual exotic fruits – this was like that – lemon,cherry, mango and jelly beans; also rich toffee, black jack chews,geranium and elder flower. The palate had refreshers, coffee, cocoa powder, orange liqueur, tobacco, Parma violets, perfume, leather and waxed jackets – somewhere between George Clooney’s Dapper Dan pomade and Holly Hunter’s handbag. With water, the nose seemed even more perfumed – waxy pine needles and sage. The palate’s sweet fruitiness (cherry Bakewell tart) was complimented by espresso dregs and cinnamon stick. This Chivas Bros distillery lies south of Elgin."

To craft DoubleWood 17 Year Old, David Stewart, who celebrates his 50th year at The Balvenie in 2012, returned to one of his most celebrated achievements – consecutive maturation in two different types of cask, a process often referred to as ‘cask finishing.’

This technique is at the heart of The Balvenie DoubleWood – it sees the whisky matured first in American oak barrels, which impart soft sweet vanilla notes, before being transferred to European oak sherry casks, where the second cask aging adds rich spicy flavors, depth and fullness of flavor.

An elder sibling to the popular DoubleWood 12 Year Old, this new aged version shares the same DNA and the honeyed, spicy characteristics as the 12 Year Old, but it is distinctly different, with deeper vanilla notes, hints of green apple, creamy toffee and a striking richness and complexity.
