About Monkey Shoulder: One day, our legendary Malt Master David Stewart decided to create the world’s first 'triple' malt, by combining single malts from three of Speyside’s finest distilleries. Why's it so mellow?: Well, for starters, there’s not a single drop of grain whisky in our Monkey Shoulder, and the chosen malts mature in first fill ex-bourbon casks. Our own coopers repair these ex-bourbon casks so that they impart a smooth and mellow vanilla flavour into the resting malt whisky. And then, there's Brian Kinsman who's our new Master now. He always chooses the right combination of casks for every batch he makes, ensuring each one is deliciously smooth and rich as the last. The three Speyside malts are then blended together in a small marrying tun where they hang out making eyes at each other for anything from three to six months.
What is Monkey Shoulder?: The term 'monkey shoulder' harks back to our whisky making heritage. It’s a reference to a condition that maltmen sometimes picked up while working long shifts, turning the barley by hand. It had a tendency to cause their arm to hang down a bit like a monkey’s, so they nicknamed it 'monkey shoulder'.

The MacNair's Story: "Ne'er happier than when exploring the globe or the spirit from the golden still, Harvey McNair was - in the parlance of his native Glasgow - a man or 'lad o'pairts': a true Victorian entrepreneur. A trader, thereby a traveller, an inventor of all sorts of mechanical contraptions, his genius lay in the blending of fine whiskies. He loved and championed the natural, unadulterated colour of whisky. "Pure gold' he said with a wink. Bon viveur and raconteur, he cut a dash about town and had a bursting social calendar. His best stories were always 'agin hisself', like how his neighbours thought him an alchemist or, indeed, how he discovered Lum Reek. But he knew a good dram when he blended it, or indeed stumbled across it. Just like our own 21st Century Whisky legend Billy Walker, who has recreated and refined the Lum Reek blend for the modern palate.
"One autumn evening in the 1860s, after a day's fishing, our man was quaffing a dram in the old stone bothy near GlenAllachie. Due to a blocked chimney (or lum) the room filled with smoke. It had "a marvellous effect on the whisky in my glass," confided McNair later to his merchant cronies. "Indeed, perfection!" Ne'er a truer word was spoken. Today's Lum Reek is the creation of our Master Blender Billy Walker, raising his hat to the top hatted Victorian. It's a heavily peated malt, marrying Islay & Speyside whiskies with rich GlenAllachie, to extend the flavour profile. Lum Reek is matured in GlenAllachie's warehouses, then bottled at 46% (and above), unchilfiltered, allowing its natural colour to shine like those golden autumns Harvey MacNair enjoyed, decked out in his waders."

"This is not an Advent Calendar; it's a series of 5 Advent Whisky Advent Tastings we are hosting on December 5th, 10th, 15th, 20th, and 27th at 7 PM MT on Zoom. We have endeavoured to make each of these 5 tastings equally interesting, with a comparable balance of products with respect to price, age, and style. Each tasting has a whisky over 23 years of age, and the average over all the tastings, excluding the 6 NAS bottlings, is 17.8 years. Each tasting also includes at least 1 KWM Cask, 1 peated whisky, and 1 whisky which is not a Scottish single malt.
"Each tasting kit includes 5 - 28ml top-secret premium whiskies. The name of each whisky is a closely guarded secret and has been redacted. KWM Staff have either been sworn to secrecy or are suffering from an entirely unrelated bout of short-term memory loss. You'll have to log in to the tasting on Zoom from a secure location using the QR code on the box for a classified debriefing on all 5 whiskies, Thursday, December 5th, 10th, 15th, 20th, and 27th, 2024, @ 7 PM MT. The origins of each whisky will be revealed in the tasting, but can also be found on the KWM Blog, through our social media channels, or by scanning the QR code on each bottle."
