Producer Description
"Caisteal Chamuis 12 Year Old is made from a blend of single malts all distilled on Islay and Orkney. It has been matured in Oloroso Sherry butts, resulting in a ‘rich and smooth’ whisky with a ‘complex fragrant, heathery, lavender‐like peat’."

Nose: Full of honey and marzipan aromas, along with ocean waves crashing against coastal rocks, salted toffee, poached pears, rum raisin pie, and a hint of smoked Havarti cheese.
Palate: Like a saltier version of a Cadbury Crunchie Bar. Chocolate, more salted toffee, sponge toffee, Dutch licorice, peaches and cream, chamomile tea with honey, and a few wine gums.
Finish: Surprisingly fresh and light. There is some lingering smoke and coastal notes and light fruit, but it is a remarkably soft finish.
Comment: Sure, it is smoky and coastal, but it is also a well-balanced and refreshing dram. With all the big and burly (and often expensive) peated bottles out there, it is nice to see that values like this can still be found.
Producer Tasting Note
Nose: The first note is one of rich beeswax. Boiled sweets too and then fragrant, light peat undertones with hints of coal tar.
Palate: Soft and smooth. Peaty, yet not medicinal; a complex fragrant, heathery, lavender-like peat. Fascinatingly complex with florality, then sweet, toffee-d coal tar notes emerging and finally evolving into a finish of concentrated sherry, crystallised fruit, more peat and an oily beeswax."

The only differences between the regular Torabhaig Allt Gleann and the Batch Strength, are the ABV (61.1% v. 46%), the effective phenols in the whisky (22.8ppm v. 17ppm as a result of less water), and the availability... less than a 1/3 as much Batch Strength is coming compared to the 46% bottling!
Allt Gleann is the second release from Torabhaig Distillery on the Isle of Skye, and the first whisky from this distillery to find its way to Canada. The Batch Strength is made the same as the 46% bottling, produced from peated Laureate and Concerto Barly, fermented with Saspirit M-1 & Pinnacle MG+ yeasts, and matured in a mix of 80% first fill and 20% refill casks before bottling at 61.1%. The barley was peated to 77ppm with highland peat, with just 22.8ppm in the resulting spirit. The distillery's tag line is that their whiskies exhibit "well-tempered peat!" The 46% version scored an impressive 89pts from Whisky Fun!

The second release of Torabhaig to come to Canada (3rd if you count both versions of the Allt Gleann) is "Cnoc Na Moine", which is Scots Gaelic for 'hill of peat'. Bottled at 46%, the whisky was matured in a mix of Bourbon, Oloroso, and PX casks. The spirit had a phenol lever of 78.4ppm, the bottled whisky 19.7ppm.
