Domaine Gérard Julien is located in Comblachien, just south of Nuits Saint Georges and dates back to the late 19th century. As Gérard continued to purchase more holdings in the 70’s and 80’s, he was able to grow the estate to roughly 10 hectares with parcels distributed in Nuits Villages, Nuits Saint Georges, and Echézeaux Grand Cru.
Étienne Julien, son of Gérard, assumed control of the estate in 2012 as winemaker. Being the fifth generation of the estate, he is introducing new methods to his winemaking while keeping the vision in line with previous generations, including organic viticulture. The very early history of the castle Gobelsburg and its vineyards is an unwritten story as with many similar estates in Austria. Archeological excavations in one of our vineyards (Grub) and during the extension of the chateau’s vaults have released many traces of settlements in the Eolithic, bronze and Iron Age, the Roman Empire and early medieval periods. Fast forward to January of 1996 when the estate and its vineyards were acquired by Willi Bründlmayer and Michael Moosbrugger through a long-term lease. Today the estate and winery are managed by Michael. Some of Austria’s finest vineyards belong to Schloss Gobelsburg, these being the vineyards on the terraced Heiligenstein and Gaisberg as well as the hollow site between the two hills, the Grub. The terroir of these hills and hollow sites are very diverse – each exemplifying their unique nuances. The hills have porous rocky soil containing mica-schist and gneiss, as well as basalt in some places on the Heiligenstein. The soil within the hollow is fertile loess 4 to 8 meters deep. On the adjoining lower sites there is loess and loam mixed with some brown and sandy soil. The Gobelsburg plateau which is south of the château, has vineyards that rest upon pebbles and gravel that were transported here by the “early Danube.” Additionally, there is a topsoil of about 0.5 to 1.0 meters consisting of black and loamy soil and loess.

Unquestionably one of the most exciting and challenging whiskies on the market, Port Charlotte commands attention in all its guises. In fact, there's a part of me that wishes Bruichladdich would ditch the other ranges and produce Port Charlotte full time, but I suppose variety is also a good thing. Unfortunately, heavy demand on the distillery's stocks means that it is exceedingly rare to see PC beyond 10 years of age. Thankfully we have indie bottlers like Rest & Be Thankful, who are the only ones giving us higher age statement Port Charlotte expressions. This single cask (#1577) appears to be full term maturation in an ex-wine hogshead. At cask strength, this should be a real rollercoaster of flavours. Look for sweetness, big smoke, and a whole lot of farmyard in a bottle.
