Big Peat is an Islay icon at this point, but it's the variants in the range, such as this 12-year-old, that are keeping it in the spotlight. Bottled at a pleasantly robust 54.8% ABV, this edition of Rock Island features a marriage of single malts from the Scottish Isles of Arran, Islay, Jura, and Orkney. Evan was somewhat disappointed at whisky from Mull not being included, but his mood improved thanks to the use of heavily charred casks for finishing.

The Big Peat makes one promise: 'peat." Vatted from single malts distilled at Ardbeg, Bowmore, Caol Ila and Port Ellen. What more could you ask for? This whisky may be made with Bowmore and Caol Ila, but it is its Ardbeg which is most dominant. Given that Port Ellen has been closed for 35 years, and any whisky from that distillery is now very mature, even the addition of only a small amount is very special. Earthy, chocolaty, salty, smoky, peaty and lightly medicinal. This whisky truly is Islay in a bottle. 46%.
