Located in Col San Martino, a hamlet in the province of Treviso situated in the hills of the production zone for Prosecco di Valdobbiadene, this crisp sipper is made from 100% Glera, an ancient grape used in the production of Prosecco. Stephane Usseglio produces wines under his own label and is now in charge of winemaking at his family's domaine, Raymond Usseglio & Fils. It's a blend of 70% old vine Grenache from 80-year-old plus vines, along with some old vine Syrah and Cinsault. Lirac is situated opposite Chateauneuf-du-Pape on the opposite side of the Rhone River (hence the name, which translates to "the other shore"). The best examples of Lirac, like this one, can give Chateauneuf a run for considerably less money.

The grapes for this wine come from an old vineyard in Quinta da Urze, more than 50 years old and at 650m altitude. The flavours are classic, showing notes of blackcurrants, chocolate, dried figs and toasted almonds. It has plenty of life left, but it is hard to resist just now. Try it with dark chocolate desserts or ripe blue cheese such as Roquefort.

Since 1670 our ancestors, followed by our great grandparents and grandparents, have extended the FERAUD & fils Estate to 22 hectares. Elvire, married to Léon Féraud was a winegrower and mother of four children. Paul, the youngest, worked the family vineyard since he was 14 years old. In 1964 he decided to produce his own wine and marketed 2,000 bottles a year. Laurence, the daughter of Paul & Odette returned to settle in Châteauneuf du Pape in 1987, having completed her wine studies and wine and spirits business school. She proposed to her parents to create an independent family estate of 5ha and registered the name Pegau. Fast forward to this century where Domaine du Pegau is regarded as one of the top producers of Chateauneuf and one of the top producers on the planet.

We sourced these wines a year ago after reading the rave reviews from numerous publications, in Germany and beyond. The Pinot Noirs are prized and will give Burgundy fans a solid alternative.
The Becker family owns more than 30 hectares and produces over 12,000 cases annually. Positioned on the very border with France in the town of Schweigen, the Beckers have witnessed that border shifting throughout history. Today, they have vineyards on both the French and German sides, at the edge of the Palatinate (Pfalz) forest—with 50 percent of their land situated on the French side in Alsace.
The soils in the area are composed of deep layers of shell limestone, with various topsoils, which in combination with the region’s mild climate, provide the ideal growing conditions for Spätburgunder. Hence, the logical focus is on the variety. As one of the pioneers, Fritz Becker Sr. was also one of the first winemakers in the region to mature his Spätburgunder in barriques.
Their most prestigious vineyard is Kammerberg, a steep single vineyard on deep marl and limestone near Wissembourg, recovered by Fritz Sr. in 1967. The old vines are mostly German clones and some French and grow on deep marl lime soils that produce powerful but also refined, mineral-driven Pinot Noirs (it is all about the dirt here!); St. Paul cultivated here in the 14th century by the Cistercians of Wissembourg, which had since become overgrown but the Beckers uprooted trees and bushes in early 2000 and planted Spätburgunder; and Sonnenberg, with poor limestone soils ideal for growing Riesling.
