A fantastic dry sparkling wine from Italy's Andreola Orsola. Located in Col San Martino, a hamlet in the province of Treviso situated in the hills of the production zone for Prosecco di Valdobbiadene, this crisp sipper is made from 100% Glera, an ancient grape used in the production of Prosecco. Stephane Usseglio produces wines under his own label and is now in charge of winemaking at his family's domaine, Raymond Usseglio & Fils. It's a blend of 70% old vine Grenache from 80-year-old plus vines, along with some old vine Syrah and Cinsault. Lirac is situated opposite Chateauneuf-du-Pape on the opposite side of the Rhone River (hence the name, which translates to "the other shore"). The best examples of Lirac, like this one, can give Chateauneuf a run for considerably less money.

Carm is a winery that is still entirely owned by the same family - Roboredo Madeira - that launched the house back in the mid-17th century. The agricultural operation has always been focused in the region where the Douro River begins its course exclusively in Portuguese territory. This is also where the oldest demarcated wine region begins – the Demarcated Douro and Port Wine Region. The grapes for this wine come from an old vineyard in Quinta da Urze, more than 50 years old and at 650m altitude. It's a field blend, with more than 20 different grapes; the main ones being: Tinta Roriz, Touriga Franca, Touriga Nacional, Tinto Cão and Sousão.

The Rottensteiner family is one of the oldest wine-growing families in South Tyrol/Alto Adige region. Their winemaking history began many generations ago, here where the vines grow on the red rock, the porphyry, typical of this region. Their surname is also the namesake of the red rock commonly found in the region's soils.. Today, Toni and Hannes (father and son), jointly conduct the affairs of the winery, a family affair to be sure. This bold red is made from 100% estate-grown Sangiovese, grown at 430 meters in the Val d'Orcia, Tuscany.
The Val d’Orcia, a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 2004, encircles the Podere Forte. The estate was founded in 1997 by Pasquale Forte, a visionary entrepreneur who has created a balanced system where every element complements the others, following the principles of organic and biodynamic agriculture. The old concept of the corte romana has been recreated on the 500-ha estate: a place where people, plants and animals coexist in harmony and sustainable self-sufficiency. Wine is the main focus, but Podere Forte is also synonymous with the breeding of Cinta Senese pigs, Chianina cattle and Suffolk sheep, as well as various other farm animals, all living on biodynamic feed. Podere Forte produces its own fertilizers and compost using vine prunings and fallen timber from the woods. The pigs eat acorns and chestnuts in the woods where they roam freely, the bees pollinate the flowers and aromatic herbs in the botanic garden where the hives are. The olive groves cover around 26 hectares and in 2020 production of the first varietal oil, from the Frantoio variety, started.

This is also where the oldest demarcated wine region begins – the Demarcated Douro and Port Wine Region. This 2008 CARM Vintage Port is plush and jammy with ripe tannins that have mellowed over time. The flavours are classic, showing notes of blackcurrants, chocolate, dried figs and toasted almonds. It has plenty of life left, but it is hard to resist just now. Try it with dark chocolate desserts or ripe blue cheese such as Roquefort.
