FRIGHTENINGLY EASY TO DRINK: A 16 year old Speysider at 57% from a Refill Barrel. "The palate was a beautiful mix of dark chocolate, glace cherries and dates with tingling lemon and tonic, spicy chilli, leather and wood."

Panel's Tasting Note: "For some, the nose indicated leather books on polished oak tables and, somehow connected with that, tobacco, white pepper and Murray mints; most of us found fresh, fruity sweetness (Bounty Bars, apricot Danish, Twizzle lollies, sherbet). The palate was a beautiful mix of dark chocolate, glacé cherries and dates with tingling lemon and tonic, spicy chilli, leather and wood – intense flavours yet mellow at the same time. Water brought a complete afternoon tea to the nose (marshmallows, fruit scones, clotted cream, Garibaldi’s and Jammy Dodgers). The palate developed lemon French Fancies and flapjacks – frighteningly easy to drink.From Rothes’ first distillery."

Panel's Tasting Note: "Attractive perfumes made the nose sinfully seductive; elderflowers, daffodils, white grapes, lemon and pepper, floated like pretty clouds over luscious landscapes of cereal. With water, we found it spritzy, fresh and clean; fruit salads of pineapple, strawberry, peach, pear and grape on beds of vanilla custard. The immediate palate was deliciously sweet (iced doughnuts, dried fruits) with entrancing orchard flavours (Williams pear and delicate blossoms made us long for Spring), but besides that, we also encountered zesty lemon sorbet, magnificent malt, subtle wood, peppery spice and (believe it or not) salty leather. An amazing, lip-smackingly tasty dram from Dufftown’s oldest distillery." -

Drinking Tip: "Not very typical of the make - could be an aperitif for the first picnic lunch of spring."

Panel's tasting note: "The initial aroma of nail varnish is soon removed making room for pleasant smells of sweetness. Caramel chocolate bars, toffee popcorn and Angel Delight vanilla custard dessert; with time followed by deeper notes of freshly ground coffee beans. The taste is like a soft scoop of vanilla and coffee ice cream, fresh fruit salad with whipped cream and lemon tart. The age is shown in the finish with a slight pleasant bitterness and a spiciness some described as balsa wood. A drop of water turns the nose sweeter and fruitier; citrus and tangerine sorbet, orange liqueur and dark cooking chocolate. The taste is like a fresh green twig and fragrant orange blossom with the sweetness of homemade shortbread."

A COMPLEX CORNUCOPIA: A Speysider at 57.6% after maturing 11 years in a Refill Barrel. "The palate started sweet before developing heat,finally lemon-scented air freshener and light woodiness."

Panel's Tasting Note:  "The nose held almost everything – lemonade, sherbet, cake mix,buttery flapjacks, pink wafers, chocolate bourbons, light tobacco,leather satchels, honey, golden syrup, Deep Heat, root ginger, dunnage warehouses and forests after rain. The palate started sweet(chocolate chip cookies, sweetie cigarettes) before developing heat(rich Jamaican ginger cake, chilli) finally lemon-scented air freshener and light woodiness. The reduced nose evoked an old-fashioned Steamie, with linens hung up; then delicate suggestions of iced lemon cakes and buttercup meadows and the inside of a new shoe.The palate now developed Fry’s Chocolate Cream and almond fingers.The distillery is next to Benriach."
