Unquestionably one of the most exciting and challenging whiskies on the market, Port Charlotte commands attention in all its guises. In fact, there's a part of me that wishes Bruichladdich would ditch the other ranges and produce Port Charlotte full time, but I suppose variety is also a good thing. Unfortunately, heavy demand on the distillery's stocks means that it is exceedingly rare to see PC beyond 10 years of age. Thankfully we have indie bottlers like Rest & Be Thankful, who are the only ones giving us higher age statement Port Charlotte expressions. This single cask (#1577) appears to be full term maturation in an ex-wine hogshead. At cask strength, this should be a real rollercoaster of flavours. Look for sweetness, big smoke, and a whole lot of farmyard in a bottle.

Single cask, cask strength, Port Charlotte. Hell yeah. After nearly two decades in an ex-wine hogshead, our friends at Rest & Be Thankful were able to get just 222 bottles of this one. Expect the wine to deliver some sweet, sour, and savoury notes to Port Charlotte's smoky, coastal, and farmy stylings. We're itching to try this one, because let's face it...19 year old Port Charlotte is as rare as hen's teeth.

Rest & Be Long Pond 2001

Founded in 1753, Long Pond is a sugar estate and distillery in the Jamaican Parish of Trelawny (also home to Hampden Estate). It was one of many sugar estates that were shut down or consolidated due to falling sugar prices over the course of time.
In the 1940s Seagram CEO, Samuel Bronfman acquired Long Pond distillery from the Jamiacan government, using the rum to establish the Captain Morgan brand. The Long Pond Sugar Estate, together with Hampden Estate, was bought by the Hussey family in 2009, while today, Long Pond Distillers Ltd is part of National Rums of Jamaica (NRJ).
Long Pond distillery closed in 2012 due to leakages in their dunder storage tanks, which required large amounts of repairs. In July 2017, NRJ held a re-opening ceremony for Long Pond distillery, however just a year later, July 2018 saw a disastrous fire at the distillery, destroying an eye-watering 65,000 litres of rum. Luckily nobody was harmed, and the distillery itself and the stills were unaffected. As rum isn’t stored or aged onsite, luckily no aged rum stock was affected, though it was still a huge setback for the distillery.

This Rest & Be Thankful Port Charlotte single cask is listed as a EU Exclusive on the indie bottler’s own website. I wonder how we managed to get some? Hmm… This 2009 Port Charlotte was matured in an ex-Bourbon Hogshead #1263 for 14 years. It was bottled in July 2023 at a cask strength of 57.4%.

Rest & Be is the best bottler to find Bruichladdich north of 10 years old from currently. This 13 Year Old was distilled by Bruichladdich in September of 2009 and spent the entirety of its maturation in an ex-Paulliac Bordeaux Red Wine Hogshead (Cask #3045). It was bottled at a lucky 13 years old at a cask strength of 59.8%.
