Mas de Gourgonnier, whether they knew it or not, is a pioneer in the natural wine realm. When they began in the 1970s, this family estate was one of the first officially certified organic wineries, back when such a practice was seen as foolish for vine growers trying to make a living. Yet Mas de Gourgonnier’s organic roots go back even further. Since the eighteenth century, the Cartier family has worked these fields, providing the local abbey with freshly grown fruits, vegetables and grain. It was in the 1950s when the family planted its first vines. The rest, as it is said, is history. Here in Mouriès, you’ll find a direct, unadulterated connection between the land and each bottle. The earthy aromas of flowering rosemary, wild sage and juniper and the mountain freshness of the cooling “mistral” winds are all echoed in the estate’s organically raised wines.

Located in the village of Sauternes, 40km south of Bordeaux, the specificity of the vineyard is created by the Garonne and the Ciron rivers. The meeting of the cold waters of the Ciron and the warmer waters of the Garonne generates from the end of the summer a morning fog providing optimal humidity. The dry weather in the afternoon dries out the grapes and concentrates the aromas. In 1611, Etienne d’Arche 8th century generation, eldest son of Bernard d’Arche, Knight and Lord of Arche, formed the branch of the family that settled in the Bordeaux region. He was the doctor regent of the University of Bordeaux and a lawyer at the Parliament of Guyenne and encouraged the family's passionate love of wine by acquiring the estate.

La Soufrandière was an old property located in Vinzelles, in the southern part of the Mâcon wine-producing region (in Southern Burgundy), initially purchased by Jules Bret, a Professor of Medicine. At that point, the vineyards covered an area of only one hectare, grown in Pouilly-Vinzelles Climat “Les Quarts” appellation d’origine contrôlée. The only sign remaining of its past wine-growing activity was a “tinailler” (a building typical of the Mâcon region, used to house vats), complete with an old-fashioned wine press. Jules Bret and his wife Louise (who came from Vinzelles) set about expanding the La Soufrandière vineyard by acquiring plots of vines adjoining their existing ones. At that time, all the vines were entrusted to sharecroppers (shared costs and production), while the grapes harvested were vinified and sold through the Vinzelles Wine Co-operative. La Soufrandière withdrew from the Vinzelles Wine Co-operative in anticipation of the arrival of Jean-Philippe and Jean-Guillaume, who bottled their first vintage in 2000. Since then they have acquired more vineyards in the region and have become certified biodynamic, producing some of the most expressive wines in southern Burgundy.
