Producer Description
"Our Special Club 2016 is a champagne that represents a fresh and elegantly chiseled year. Its fine bubbles and sharp nose will charm you from the first tasting. On the palate, this champagne reveals a long and dynamic profile, with a beautiful lemony acidity in the finish. Perfect for celebrating special moments and accompanying your finest meals."
750 mlArnaud is a member of the Club Trésors, a group of 28 winemakers, selected from the finest areas of the Champagne region, and a Special Club champagne is only made in outstanding vintage years. The 2016 comes from four parcels in Villers-Marmery, planted on chalky south and east-facing soils, whose average age is 35 years. About a fifth of the grapes were vinified in oak casks, and the remainder in stainless steel. After the first fermentation, the wine is put through malolactic fermentation. After being bottled, it was aged for 5 years on its lees and was dosed at 7 g/l on disgorgement. Beautiful creamy mousse, with a full and long, yet refreshingly citrus palate. We feel it stands firmly among the great Champagnes of the world, and is priced far less than most of those famous marques.

Villers-Marmery is an anomaly in the Montagne de Reims (one of the five sub-regions of Champagne), an island of Chardonnay in a sea of Pinot Noir. This is where the wines of A. Margaine are crafted, and it can be said that these are some of the most hauntingly beautiful and original Champagnes you can drink. The clone of Chardonnay used by Margaine in Villers-Marmery is specific to this area and cannot be found anywhere else in Champagne.
Mathilde Margaine represents the 5th generation and is the first woman to oversee the Margaine estate in Villers-Marmery. She received her Master's in International Wine Trade from the Burgundy School of Business in Dijon. After a year or so working in New York City as a brand ambassador for a Champagne house, she decided to return home and get her hands dirty. Starting by directly working and overseeing the family's vineyards, She now works with her father in all aspects of the Domaine, from the vines to the winery, to the export and marketing duties.
The majority of Margaine’s holdings are in Villers-Marmery, a village planted almost entirely to Chardonnay, with the vineyards averaging roughly 35 years of age. Margaine also has a small parcel of Pinot Noir in the village of Verzy.
This is just one example of what the press is saying:
“...an absolutely fabulous set of wines from Arnaud Margaine. More than anything else, what I admire most about these wines is a level of textural purity and finesse in the mousse that places them in the top tier of Champagne, whether grower or grande marque.” - Antonio Galloni, Vinous Media
