Single cask, cask strength, Port Charlotte. Hell yeah. After nearly two decades in an ex-wine hogshead, our friends at Rest & Be Thankful were able to get just 222 bottles of this one. Expect the wine to deliver some sweet, sour, and savoury notes to Port Charlotte's smoky, coastal, and farmy stylings. We're itching to try this one, because let's face it...19 year old Port Charlotte is as rare as hen's teeth.

Andrew's Tasting Note
Nose: is this a peated Black Art? ... ; big, rich, and intense; quince paste, salted caramel, German licorice, Dominican cigars, and beach bonfire smoke; Sun-Rype Fruit Souce Bars, Cadbury Fruit & Nut bars, dried cranberries, and sauteed strawberries; musty dunnage warehouse notes, firm leather, Wine Gums; did I get it all?!
Palate: big, jammy, and intensely smoky; this is like a peated Black Art...; intensely fruity, more Fruit Source and Fruit & Nut bars, dried cranberries, acai berries, and pan seared strawberries; salty German, and dark sweet Aussie licorices; a touch of malt, musty old oak, and ashy beach bonfire smoke; clove, fennel seeds, nutmeg on the spice front; raw old leather and red wine tannins.
Finish: long, dry, and leathery, with more ashy smoke, drying spice, and earthy tannins.
Comment: not as juicy as I was hoping for on the palate, but overall, much better than I expected; wine cask and whisky IMHO are a dangerous proposition, but it works well here; looking for a peated Black Art? this is your dram!

Finglassie is what the Inchdairnie distillery calls their peated stocks. We've only seen one or two of them so far - Inchdairnie was only founded in 2015 - so it's hard to say what the distillery profile will be, but it was probably a smart decision to release this is a small batch bottling, as opposed to single cask releases. We're probably getting a closer approximation of what we can expect in future releases. The peated ones, anyway.
This 5-year-old was matured in ex-Islay Bourbon casks (so...introducing a bit of the Islay style of peat perhaps?), and finished in ex-Oloroso butts.

Under the watchful eye of the previous owners, Bruichladdich put a lot of spirit into very interesting (and ridiculously high end) wine casks. It only makes sense that we're starting to see a we smattering of these 'way out there' single casks hitting the market. But where once the shelves sagged under the weight of Bruichladdich one-and-dones, now we have to wait patiently for bottlers like R&BT to give us a peek at unique single cask Laddies. Great age and great drinking strength on this ex-wine cask matured Islay malt.

Unquestionably one of the most exciting and challenging whiskies on the market, Port Charlotte commands attention in all its guises. In fact, there's a part of me that wishes Bruichladdich would ditch the other ranges and produce Port Charlotte full time, but I suppose variety is also a good thing. Unfortunately, heavy demand on the distillery's stocks means that it is exceedingly rare to see PC beyond 10 years of age. Thankfully we have indie bottlers like Rest & Be Thankful, who are the only ones giving us higher age statement Port Charlotte expressions. This single cask (#1577) appears to be full term maturation in an ex-wine hogshead. At cask strength, this should be a real rollercoaster of flavours. Look for sweetness, big smoke, and a whole lot of farmyard in a bottle.

This limited edition Port Charlotte was initially matured in first fill ex-Bourbon barrels for 4 years before finishing a further 5 years in Pomerol wine barriques. Peated to 40ppm, the whisky was bottled after 9 years at 54.5%.
