While this whiskey was made in Indiana, Spirits Of French Lick isn't just another bottler of MGP products: they are a bona fide distillery that sources locally grown grains and distills and matures the whiskey themselves. That is almost a quaint notion in this day and age, isn't it?
The Mash Bill for The Mattie Gladden Bottled in Bond Bourbon is low corn and high rye: 55% Corn, 35% Rye, and 10% Victory Malt. The mash is fermented with two yeast strains and the focus is on putting the grain notes first and letting the fruit notes come along for the ride. After distillation, the resulting spirit is aged for at least four years before being bottled at 100 proof, or 50% ABV, as the Bottled in Bond act of 1897 states it must be.

Evan's Tasting Note
Nose: Robust, spicy and chocolate-driven at the same time. Freshly fired s'mores, dark roast coffee beans, Earl Grey tea with lemon, fresh dill, peppercorns, cloves, hickory, and an old varnished wooden rocking chair.
Palate: Big and chewy for 50%. Oranges and cloves, cinnamon stick, more peppercorn, peach crumble, strawberry rhubarb pie with a slightly burnt crust, toasty rye, honey-roasted pecans, and a Mr Big chocolate bar.
Finish: Some chewy tannin, cherry cough syrup and wood spice on the long, slow fade.
Comments: Robust is the keyword for this Bourbon. It is bold, toasty, roasted, and delicious. You may not have a Bourbon like this on your shelf at home, but you should.
Producer Tasting Note
Nose: Fresh baked bread, honey, anise, apple and stone fruit.
Palate: Oily with a very full-bodied mouthfeel. Eucalyptus, molasses, clove, ginger. Slight citrus and grains of paradise.
Finish: Long and reappearing on the back of the tongue with notes of pepper, tobacco leaf, and mint cream.
