Usseglio Chateauneuf du Pape Red

$76.99

The Usseglio family moved from Italy to France in the early 1930s, and they've been making fine wine there ever since. In 1999, the Domaine covered a little more than fifteen hectares of vines but they now own 55 hectares of vineyards throughout the region. The domaine employs biodynamic viticulture, a genuine philosophy of life that encourages respect for the earth, an understanding of natural cycles and the promotion of harmony between man and This beautiful Châteauneuf du Pape is a blend of 80% Grenache noir, 5% Syrah, 5% Mourvèdre, 5% Cinsault, and 5% Counoise from 50-yera-old vines. Beautiful aromatic complexity, powerful aromas of ripe red fruits such as cherry and raspberry blend with spicy notes of black pepper and licorice, along with subtle hints of garrigues. This wine reveals itself as full-bodied with a silky texture and fine, flavorful tannins, giving way to a long finish that speaks of great elegance.

Robertparkert.com Tasting Note (2018 Vintage)

91 - Points - Joe Czerwinski - "Cherry and pomegranate fruit are joined by hints of asphalt and cracked pepper on the nose of Usseglio's 2018 Chateauneuf du Pape. It's spicy and savory overall, with a silky feel to the medium to full-bodied palate. Not overly concentrated, it's nevertheless nicely balanced, with the delicious tension of just-ripe fruit and a bright, lingering finish."

Robertparkert.com Tasting Note (2017 Vintage)

92 - Points - Joe Czerwinski - "The 2017 Chateauneuf du Pape is more red fruited than the 2018, with cherries and raspberries leading the way. It's full-bodied and concentrated, perhaps a bit more tannic and not as easy to drink right now, but well done, with hints of garrigue adding nuance to the long finish."

The Châteauneuf-du-Pape and Rhone winemaking tradition of Domaine Raymond Usseglio & Fils spans three generations now. Current head and winemaker Stéphane Usseglio, son of Raymond, heads the Domaine.

The history of this domain starts with Francis Usseglio, who immigrated to Rhone from Italy in 1931. Nearly two decades later in 1948, Francis was able to start his own winery within the Rhone region. Francis had two sons that continued winemaking in the are. Pierre Usseglio directly took charge of the family estate while Raymond Usseglio began operating his own winery in 1964.

Raymond's son Stephane Usseglio now runs the Domaine. Stephane has been a central part of the estate since starting in 1999 at the age of 22 years old. Stephane has pursued organic and biodynamic agriculture, and the Domaine's vineyards are certified organic.

Domaine Raymond Usseglio owns 20 hectatres of vineyard within Chateauneuf du Pape and a total of 30 hectares in the Rhone region.
