Usseglio Chateauneuf Imperiale

$96.99

While up to 13 different grape varietals can be blended together in making Chateauneuf du Pape red wine, the Domaine Raymond Usseglio CNDP Cuvee Imperiale is composed almost entirely of very old vine Grenache (90-plus percent in most vintages). The grapes for this tremendous and age-worthy red are harvested from estate vines in the Chateauneuf du Papes holdings of the Domaine - most of which are more than a century old and were originally planted in 1902.

From The Winery

"La Cuvée Imperiale is from our oldest vines, most of them 100 years old (planted in 1901-1902.) Extremely low yields (16-18 h/h) guarantee a wine that is dense and profound. The ancient Grenache vines bring to this cuvee their finesse and elegance. Will age for dozens of years. To be carafed during the first years. Because it is bottled without any filtration, some sediment – natural and beneficial to the aging process – is possible."

Robertparker.com Tasting Note (2018 Vintage)

97 Points - Joe Czerwinski - "Most of the vInes for the 2018 Chateauneuf du Pape Cuvee Imperiale were planted in 1902, mainly Grenache, with a few other scattered plants of other varieties. Full-bodied and concentrated, it boasts massive flavors of raspberries and cherries, with just enough herbal intricacies woven into the fabric of the wine to impart a sense of lightness and freshness—it positively tingles on the long, long finish. Produced from biodynamically grown fruit at yields just half the maximum permitted by the appellation (16–18 hectoliters per hectare, versus 35), it's a tremendous effort."

Robertparker.com Tasting Note (2017 Vintage)

96 Points - Joe Czerwinski - "The 2017 Chateauneuf du Pape Cuvee Imperiale (from vines planted in 1902) is firm and structured to age magnificently. Roses, black tea and red raspberries all appear on the nose and palate, framed by fine-grained tannins. I suspect it will close down shortly, but there is terrific material here, and the wine will drink well for two decades."

The Châteauneuf-du-Pape and Rhone winemaking tradition of Domaine Raymond Usseglio & Fils spans three generations now. Current head and winemaker Stéphane Usseglio, son of Raymond, heads the Domaine.

The history of this domain starts with Francis Usseglio, who immigrated to Rhone from Italy in 1931. Nearly two decades later in 1948, Francis was able to start his own winery within the Rhone region. Francis had two sons that continued winemaking in the are. Pierre Usseglio directly took charge of the family estate while Raymond Usseglio began operating his own winery in 1964.

Raymond's son Stephane Usseglio now runs the Domaine. Stephane has been a central part of the estate since starting in 1999 at the age of 22 years old. Stephane has pursued organic and biodynamic agriculture, and the Domaine's vineyards are certified organic.

Domaine Raymond Usseglio owns 20 hectatres of vineyard within Chateauneuf du Pape and a total of 30 hectares in the Rhone region.
