anCnoc is Scottish Gaelic for 'the hill', which, in English is rendered 'Knockdhu' and should not be confused with the other distillery 'Knockando'. The brand decided to market itself under the label anCnoc to avoid confusion. Knockdhu is located in the Eastern Highlands not far from the town of Keith. The whisky has in recent years been marketed heavily as a single malt, though for most of its life it has been primarily produced for blends like Haig. 40%

"This is a single refill hogshead of 2006 16 year old Knockdhu. It's also very peaty and quite ridiculously pale, pure and razor-sharp. A singular and almost ideological style of whisky. The original cask strength of this one was up over 67%. Once we'd found a glass that didn't dissolve on contact with the sample, we played around with water and various strengths for ages before settling on 55% as delivering the most balance between raw peat ashes, frothy seawater, lemon juice drizzled directly over your tonsils and having pickled green olives fired at you from a blunderbuss. Why not sip it casually while playing a few rounds of BogSponge3000 down the arcade..."

Don't anCnoc it till you've tried it! This 18 year old mystery peated Highland single malt Scotch is part of the Boutique-y Core Range, bottled at 45.8%. From a mix of ex-Bourbon, Oloroso, & PX Sherry casks. Rumour has it this is peated Knockdhu... very cool, and really well priced!

"Our label design settled for just the one deer, starting with a young buck, getting older, and more dignified, as the whiskies aged, finishing with the dominant stag who has been through some scapes in his life; older, wiser, and looks a little pissed with everything! Our Highland deer is a little more grown up once again, and has gained a few ‘pints’ on his antlers, and is now an Imperial Stage with 14 points…

Peat and sherry is like PB&J to most peat lovers. The union creates a multidimensional whisky that becomes something more than the sum of its parts. Finding malts in this style is getting harder and harder. Great price on this anCnoc that was first matured in American Oak Barrels and Hoggies, before finishing in Sherry Butts.

anCnoc Peatheart Batch 3

Batch #3 of anCnoc's Peatheart series has just landed. It's been a minute or two since we saw Batch #2. anCnoc's typically unpeated style is given the rock n' roll treatment here. Expect this one to be a lot rowdier than most malts bearing the anCNoc/Knockdhu name. Peated to 34 ppm. Right around Lagavulin and Caol Ila levels. They tell us that it has been matured in "American oak barrels and hogsheads, some of which were also further matured in virgin American oak barrels."
Natural colour, non-chill filtered, and bottled at 46% abv.

The anCnoc 18 Year is a great addition to the brand's stable. It won Highland Malt Whisky of the Year 13-20 Year, World Whiskies Awards 2016. The whisky is matured in both Ex-Sherry and Ex-Bourbon barrels; 46%. Only 6,000 bottles releases around the world.
Producer Description: "The anCnoc 18 Year Old has matured in Spanish oak ex-sherry casks and American oak ex-bourbon barrels and has been bottled in its most natural form, neither chill-filtered nor coloured. As a result this dram may develop a light haze with the addition of water or if kept at a cold temperature. This haze is a natural characteristic of whisky that is non chill-filtered."

This new anCnoc is available in only vanishingly small quantities, at least initially. We managed to snag 18 of the paltry 30 bottles which have initially trickled into Alberta. Bottled at 46% and matured in Ex-Bourbon and Ex-Sherry. Some of the sherry casks may have been American oak, to complicate the picture only slightly.
