Escarpment, defined as a long, steep slope that lies at the end of a plateau, is a unique place within Martinborough. Big open skies stretch across the Wairarapa, ‘glistening waters’ in te reo Māori, and the ancient alluvial soils run deep beneath the land. The home vineyard on Te Muna Road is situated just minutes east of Martinborough village, with 24 hectares of distinctive alluvial gravel, terraced land stretches out along the banks of the Huangarua River. The soils of the vineyard are alluvial loams that were formed by the Huangarua River over 20,000 years ago. With very deep alluvial gravels now layered over the loams this composition ensures exceptional drainage, one of the key prerequisites for nurturing and producing premium quality, healthy grape vines. Much like the great wines of Burgundy, Escarpment’s names their top Pinot Noirs after the vineyards from which the grapes were grown, rather than the grape variety. The Single Vineyard Kupe, Pahi, Te Rehua and Kiwa demonstrate this philosophy with distinctive elegance and character.

Wittmann Spatburgunder

Wittmann is a highly regarded producer whose history dates back to the 17th century. The current winery was built in 1829 but the winemaking employs state-of-the-art viticulture. The vineyards are certified biodynamic and fermentations rely on natural yeasts. The Pinot Noir grapes are manually harvested and sorted and all the press wine is transferred to tank via gravity flow. Wittmann has been highly awarded in the German wine press and now produces some of the most coveted wines produced in the country.

La Cartuja and its lands were acquired by five families, who in 1844 founded a company to produce wine and promote the cultivation of vineyards in the area. The La Unión Agricultural Society is the origin of our winery, Cellers de Scala Dei. In 1878 , the first bottles of Priorat wine left this winery on their way to the Universal Exhibition in Paris, where they won a Gold Medal. The same recognition they obtained ten years later, at the Universal Exhibition in Barcelona in 1888. Cellers de Scala Dei was refounded in 1974 and launched the first "modern" Priorat wines on the market. Until the wine boom of the early nineties, they were one of the few private wineries that bottled wines from this region.
