One of the many newer distilleries on the Irish Whiskey scene is the Shed Distillery, which was founded in 2014. The Drumshanbo Single Pot Still Irish Whiskey is triple distilled with a grain combination of malted barley and Irish Barra Oats. The resulting spirit is aged in a combination of ex-Bourbon and ex-Oloroso casks.
What is Single Pot Still Irish Whiskey you ask? It is whiskey made using a combination of malted and unmalted barley. Why do this, you ask? Why, to dodge taxes, of course! The Malt Tax came into being in Ireland for a short time starting in 1785, enforced by the (insert expletive said in your best Irish accent here) English. The Irish, being Irish, decided that they didn't need to use malted barley for the entirety of the mash used to distill whiskey and started adding portions of unmalted barley. Necessity being the mother of invention, this eventually became a legitimate style of whiskey-making that is now not just celebrated but codified into law in Ireland with the Single Pot Still Irish Whiskey classification.

This winery begins with a tale of two brothers - Walter and Antonio Mastroberardino -who parted ways, with Antonio acquiring the winery and Walter acquiring the vineyards (renamed as Terradora). The Terredora di Paolo estate is located on the hills of Irpinia surrounding the valleys of the Sabato and Calore rivers. With about 180 hectares of vineyards, they rank among the most prestigious producers in Southern Italy. The South of Italy is one of the most interesting wine areas in the country and Campania, and especially the Irpinia region, produces wines from native grape varieties such as Aglianico, Fiano, Greco, Piedirosso and Falanghina, all of which are brimming with personality. Aglianico has been called the Barolo of the South for its power and its ability to age for many years. This neutral alcohol has had no contact with copper nor the botanicals so it produces a harsher, less balanced gin.

"The Volstead Act of 1920 which initiated Prohibition in the USA granted permits to six distillers in Kentucky to continue to bottle bourbon for medicinal purposes. Through one of these permits, Old Forester continued to be produced as medicinal whiskey on Louisville’s famed Whiskey Row. It is the only bourbon continuously sold by the same company that has been available for sale before, during and after Prohibition.
During this time, all whiskies had to be bottled at 100 Proof. With a barrel entry proof of 100, the “angel’s share” would have created a 115 proof whiskey after maturation. To pay homage to this era, Old Forester presents 1920 Prohibition Style Bourbon at 115 proof to represent the rich flavor profile this bourbon had nearly 100 years ago."

We have a new release from Scotland's smallest distillery... I can't back up that statement about them being Scotland's smallest distillery, but it was on their website. Given there is only one man making the whisky, and he only distills when he's not farming... it is probably true. What is undeniable is that the whiskies are lovely, legitimately rare, and in my opinion, it might be one of the best batches we've seen on this side of the Atlantic!

"The barley variety Publican was grown in the 43ac field and harvested by John and Sandy on the 28th & 29th August 2009. It was then dried and stored on the farm to be malted in Alloa during the summer of 2010. The twenty-seven first-fill barrels, which had previously been used to mature bourbon from Clermont Springs distillery in Kentucky, were matured on the upper level of our dunnage warehouse. They were filled in June, July and August 2011 and bottled in September 2023."
