It all started in the middle of the nineteenth century when French negociants visited the Rioja region to find alternative sources of quality grapes to transform into wine, since the phylloxera epidemic had decimated their vineyards. The founder, Don Rafael López de Heredia y Landeta, a knowledgeable and enthusiastic student in the art of wine making, followed closely in their footsteps.
Don Rafael fell in love with the region and especially the area around Haro, the mythical capital of the Rioja Alta region. He observed that there was a magical combination of soil and climate that would offer the perfect environment for producing wine that would eventually become world famous. Around 1877 he began the design and construction of the complex that is today known as the López de Heredia bodega (winery), the oldest in Haro and one of the first three bodegas in the Rioja region.

This is a big gin with a floral-citric backbone. The "New Western Dry" gin was such a hit just in BC that it has delayed the production of the distillery's whisky. This Lemon Cream Liqueur comes to us from Nastro D'oro of Italy. Bottled at 17% ABV this is made with cream, milk, sugar, glucose syrup, alcohol, milk protein, and a lemon peel infusion.

Liqueurs don't often get us excited at Kensington Wine Market, but Bryan and Evan loved this Walnut liqueur. The liquid is dark, sticky and somewhat sweet with a great depth of flavours: cinnamon, vanilla and nutmeg. At 40% it drinks nicely on its own, especially on a cold day, but would also be an interesting cocktail ingredient!
Nocillo or sometimes Nocino is a liqueur made from green unripened walnuts that are harvested on June 24, St. John's Day. This day is regarded as the best for harvesting the nuts as they are juicy, but the shell has not hardened so they can easily be cut in half. The nuts are macerated and fermented with sugar for 90 days.

Considering Scapa has a production capacity of nearly a million and a half litres per year, it's an absolute crime that we see no more than two official expressions from the distillery. While we can only shake our heads in frustration, it's hard not to be impressed by this young coastal gem. Everything you'd expect in an island malt is here (yes, including that tangy oceanic salinity), but there is also an impressive array of fruit notes that elevate this one beyond what should reasonably be expected in a glass of whisky this affordable. Great, highly-drinkable malt from Orkney.

One of the rarest and hardest to find tequilas in the world, The Tears of Llorona is an Extra Anejo, aged 5 years before bottling. Unusually, the tequila has been matured in ex-Scotch, Sherry and Brandy barrels. Bottled as 43% in a 1L bottle. Only 3 bottles at KWM!
From the Producer: "Tears of Llorona is an extra extra añejo tequila. It begins as 100% blue agaves from high volcanic slopes in Jalisco, where growth is slow. Master Tequilero Germán Gonzalez hand selects the agaves and has them harvested late, increasing their starch and sugars. The piñas are roasted slowly in the traditional way. His yeast is proprietary and fermentation is slow. Distillation is by copper pot still and barreling is at very high specific gravity. Tears is aged in three different barrels -- oak that has previously held scotch, sherry, and brandy -- and brought together in very small batches to create a complex fusion that is more like a cognac than a tequila. Germán then bottles at 43% specific gravity to balance the flavors. This results in a very high rate of osmotic loss - the “angel's tears” that are one reason for the name, Tears of Llorona."

Llorona was a very beautiful Aztec princess, beloved by a Spanish conquistador. Alas, the Conquistador abandons her and in her madness and sorrow, she goes to the nearby lake and drowns their children and herself. La Llorona—the “weeping woman"—now haunts Mexico's lakes looking for children to steal. It is a story Germán heard many times as a child. And it was Llorona’s passionate tears that inspired Germán’s greatest creation."
