“Crafted in Amatitán, Jalisco, using fully mature 100% Organic Blue Weber Agave from the lowlands (El Valle), each plant is hand-selected at peak sugar levels. The agave is cooked in a low-pressure autoclave over a 24-hour cycle to preserve its natural flavors. The juice is extracted using a roller mill with four passes, fermented in stainless steel vats with proprietary yeast, and double distilled in stainless steel pots with copper coils. The tequila is aerated before bottling to enhance drinkability and rested in stainless steel vats for 1-3 months to allow it to become more full-flavored and full-bodied.”

It was not by chance that Bernard O’Phelan (1770-1841), a young Irish wine merchant, left his native town of Tipperary at the end of the 18th century to set himself up in Bordeaux. The town at this time was an important trading hub with the British Isles. Close relations were built up between the families that bought and sold the wines of the region from one another. These links were such that they led to alliances and even marriages, in particular that of Bernard Phélan with one of the daughters of Daniel Guestier, a well-known merchant in the Bordeaux wine market. Helped by the experience of his father-in-law, he could now envisage producing his own wines. At the beginning of the 20th century, Château Ségur de Garramey took on its modern name of Château Phélan Ségur.

To celebrate the 2020 vintage, Goulée by Cos d’Estournel has been renamed G d’Estournel. In the 2020 vintage, the Merlot from the vineyard in the northern part of Médoc turned out as exceptional as it did at the flagship property of Cos d’Estournel. It saw more extreme weather conditions and less rain than Saint-Estèphe, but the vines being aged 35 years old on average, they were able to compensate thanks to their roots, which forever dig deeper from one year to the next, and the fresh air brought minerality from the nearby Gironde Estuary and ocean. The resulting wine displays a unique profile: the balance and aromatics of a fresh vintage are accompanied by an acidity and a quality of tannins usually observed in warmer vintages. G d’Estournel 2020, carried by the richness of the Merlot, is essentially delectable, and marked by notes reminiscent of salty sea breezes and a black pepper touch that lend it great energy.
