The wine itself is aged in small oak casks for an average of 15 years before bottling. Meerendal’s wine heritage started in 1702, when sixty thousand vines were planted on the current site. The Coertze family purchased the estate in 2004 and in doing so became became part of the prestigious history of the region. The property is situated close to Cape Town in aicool- climate location (by SA standards) with fertile and predominately clay soils. The variety of elevations and orientations of the landscape, close proximity to the ocean with constant winds and a Mediterranean climate, makes the terroir ideal for cultivation of grapes. The original cellar was built in 1943 but has been thoroughly modernized in recent years. The wine is a blend of Pinotage, Shiraz, Merlot, and Cabernet Sauvignon aged for 14 months in new and used French Oak. This Rest & Be Thankful Port Charlotte single cask is listed as a EU Exclusive on the indie bottler’s own website. I wonder how we managed to get some? Hmm… This 2009 Port Charlotte was matured in an ex-Bourbon Hogshead #1263 for 14 years. It was bottled in July 2023 at a cask strength of 57.4%.
Altolandon Organic Red

Owner & winemaker, Rosalia Molina, produces these organic wines in one of Spain's highest-altitude wineries. Her mission is to make wines that express the typicity of DO Manchuela, and this includes the vineyards, the altitude and the varieties planted. The climate pushes the limits for grape growing because, at 1,100 metres above sea level issues like frost become a concern. The grapes tend to experience a large diurnal range that encourages even ripening and helps to retain natural acidity. Rosalia's vineyards are certified organic, she uses only natural fertilizers, promoting biodiversity by welcoming chickens, sheep and pigs from local farms to roam the vineyards freely. Grapes are hand-harvested and vinified as naturally as possible with native yeasts and little other intervention. The wines are then aged in clay amphora and some in French oak to give texture and complexity.
This organic red blend is made up predominantly of Syrah, with some Cabernet Franc and Garnacha, dense and layered. One to enjoy now or cellar for a while. It spends 24 months in French oak as well.Ripe notes of black berries, blueberries, a touch of minerality and an expressive note of black pepper. A great wine to pair with a juicy steak, tourtiere and/or roasted root vegetables. Vegan friendly!

Something magical happened when Derek Rohlffs decided to veer onto a dirt road in the middle of nowhere. In a far-flung vineyard with grazing sheep, he happened upon the perfect place to grow Pinot Noir that would push boundaries and defy expectations. The 2022 Outlier Pinot Noir is a delicious wine produced from a single, organically farmed vineyard in the upper reaches of Spring Valley, a narrow ravine just east of Clear Lake. The cool micro-climate at Long Valley Ranch allows for the slow ripening that is so critically important when it comes to producing a balanced Pinot Noir.
This outlying CCOF-certified vineyard is the only one for miles around. A mix of Pinot Noir vines was established in 2015, including Dijon clones 114, 115, 667, 777, and 943. Long Valley Ranch is off the beaten path but the 15-kilometre drive up the dirt road leading to the vineyard is worth it—and then some!
