Caprili is a Brunello estate in the southwestern sector of the Montalcino appellation near the hamlet of Tavernelle. They are considered one of the old guard of Montalcino producers as they were established in 1965 when they split off from the famous Pieve Santa Restituta estate. The estate is extremely well located, next to Pieve Santa Restituta but also immediately adjacent to Soldera. As such, it is no surprise they are making great wine at Caprili. The bigger surprise is that they are still very much “under the radar”.

The primary fruit remains intact in this vintage. This village bottling shows velvety richness and concentration that stems directly from that exceptional fruit quality. Viña Mayu was established in 2005 in the Elqui Valley, the first fine wine producer to enter the wine business since 1998. Mauro Olivier was one of the pioneers, planting vines for fine wine production and sourcing grapes from the different vineyards in the valley. He started working on his family vineyards for table grape production at a young age; years later he began working in Pisco production (the national Chilean spirit, made from white wine). In 2000, he planted the first Carménère and Syrah vines in the valley. 5 years later, in 2005, he decided it was time to embark on his own wine project, under the Mayu label. Mayu is an ancient INCA name for the Milky Way, literally meaning "creek of stars." The region lies 400 km (250 mi) north of Santiago, at the southern end of the Atacama Desert in the Coquimbo region, and rises to 2000 metres above sea level. These are great value wines produced from what is effectively a high-altitude desert. The hot arid climate allows for good ripening while the cold desert nights help preserve acidity.

The Michel family presides over just 1 hectare of white grapes - Roussanne & Clairette. The Châteauneuf du Pape Blanc they produce has delicate white flower aromas and a generous weight of ripe orchard fruit and a persistent dry finish. This fine white Châteauneuf' is made from roughly equal volumes of Clairette and Roussanne, vinified in stainless steel and bottled the winter following the harvest. It is savoury and sapid with alluring fleurs blanches aromas, a well-delineated palate of white orchard fruit and a long, elegant finish. It would make an excellent foil for a Mediterranean tapenade.
94 Points Wine Advocate: A 50-50 blend of Clairette and Roussanne, all made and matured in stainless steel, the 2023 Chateauneuf du Pape Blanc is a classic example of Vieux Donjon's white. Scents of tangerine, pineapple and white peach are tinged with just a hint of honeyed richness that somehow enhances rather than compromises the overall sense of freshness. It's medium to full-bodied in the mouth, with a silky texture and ample length.
