The 2022 Vintage of Ribbon Vale Cabernet Sauvignon is made from 90% Cabernet Sauvignon along with 2.5% each Merlot, Cab Franc, Malbec, and Petit Verdot.
This wine is from Moss Wood Winery's second vineyard site called the Ribbon Vale. This vineyard is slightly higher elevation than the original one with aspects to the South and West. This makes for longer time for grapes to ripen and a cooler climate.
This wine is complex with an outstanding elegance. It pairs fantastically with food but is also subtle enough to drink on its own. If you are looking for the perfect pairing a lovely tender rib steak would make this gem of a wine shine!

Nose: This is dominated by dark fruits - blackberry, mulberry, black currant, and plum, with variations on that theme like blueberry yoghurt, Black Forest cake, dark licorice and jubes. Behind these are the complex notes such as violets, cedar, tobacco, tar and toasty oak.
Palate: The wine has full body, with intense black fruit flavours of blackberry, mulberry, boysenberry, cassis and dark cherry, plus background notes of black olive, licorice, dark chocolate, vanilla custard, tobacco, cedar and dried spices like cinnamon and nutmeg. Tannins and acid are very well balanced, with a presence running through the mid and back palate. Everything is well integrated giving a soft, plush mouthfeel.
Cellaring: Continuing the comparison with 2008, where the Cabernet Sauvignon aligns even more closely, we certainly encourage those with the opportunity to cellar the 2022 Ribbon Vale. It will take at least 10-15 years to develop some bottle bouquet and a further 10-15 years beyond that to complete the process. Beyond 30 years of age, there will be no rapid decline and it should continue to drink well into its 5th decade.

Planted in 1969, Moss Wood is a founding estate of the Margaret River wine region of Western Australia. Grapes were first planted on the estate in 1969 and Keith Mugford took over the estate in 1985. To this day, Moss Wood is considered one of the best growers and winemakers in the wine region, which itself is considered one of the premier wine regions of Australia.
The Estate property was first planted with Cabernet Sauvignon followed by Semillion and Pinot Noir. The Ribbon Vale property was acquired in 2000 is planted with Sauvignon Blanc, Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot and Cabernet Franc vines.
Keith and his wife, Clare, have developed the vineyard and utilized their wine-making skill to consistently produce wines of great finesse and lasting capability.

Amy's Red Blend from Moss Wood is both a customer and staff favourite at Kensington Wine Market. Vintage after vintage, this Bordeaux-style blend punches well above its price point. The 2024 vintage contains 72% Cabernet Sauvignon, 11% Merlot,9% Petit Verdot, and 8% Malbec.
Established in 1969, Moss Wood is an important, founding estate of the Margaret River wine region in the northern sub-region of Wilyabrup, Western Australia. Clare & Keith Mugford, as winemakers, viticulturists & proprietors, have been making wine & tending the vineyard at Moss Wood since 1984 & 1979, respectively. Their exacting viticulture ensures the production of high-quality fruit, and they have created a stable of fine wines distinguished by their consistency over each vintage, along with their ability to age superbly.
They have put significant effort into developing an appropriate style for each of their wines, but Cabernet Sauvignon, their first wine, is still the primary focus. Naturally, they looked to the great wines of Bordeaux for inspiration and carefully examined the factors that have made Bordeaux the benchmark for Cabernet Sauvignon.
As they were making wine in Margaret River inspired by those of the Medoc, they felt it was important to consider the Bordeaux environment as opposed to Margaret River’s individualistic climate and terroir. Wine writer Jancis Robinson has called them the Chateau Latour of Australia, and, we might add, for a fraction of what Latour costs.

Brilliantly made, and worth every penny. Owner Jim Wyse produced his first wines in 1997, concentrating on 4 grape varieties -- Cabernet and Merlot for red wines and Chardonnay and Pinot Gris for white. Winemaker Bill Dyer takes special pride in the fact that Burrowing Owl has become one of THE Canadian cult wines and is highly sought after upon release. Look for cedar, mint and blueberry aromas, finishing with hints of dill and anise. Small amounts of Merlot and Cabernet Franc added.

One of our favourite wines and wineries. Moss Wood is an iconic winery that helped put Margaret river on the map. This is their flagship wine and an absolutely stellar Cabernet with layers of complexity and character. This 2022 marks the 50th vintage of Moss Wood's Cabernet is made up of 94% Cabernet Sauvignon, 4% Cab Franc, and 1% Petit Verdot. It was matured in 228 litre French oak barrels (16% new).

"In summary, what do we make of the 2022 Moss Wood Cabernet Sauvignon, the 50th vintage of this wine? Given the milestone, we’re happy and just a bit relieved we’ve been able to deliver a year with all the classic features of the style. The warm season ensured consistent ripeness, so the wine displays the vineyard’s typically dark fruit aromas and the palate certainly has the expected key feature of concentrated but balanced tannin, all enhanced by the prettier fragrances which we attribute to the cooler final weeks in March. Very few have been better."

This Merlot is from Moss Wood's second vineyard called Ribbon Vale. They purchased the vineyard in March 2000. The vineyard was already in production, but it did offer a new challenge for Moss Wood in that they had never worked with Merlot before, and it ended up being quite different from the other grapes they were used to. Since then, they have focused on vineyard management and the way they produce the wine, and it's evolved into something special. We have a few bottles of the 2019 left!
