One of our favourite wines and wineries. Moss Wood is an iconic winery that helped put Margaret river on the map. This is their flagship wine and an absolutely stellar Cabernet with layers of complexity and character. This 2022 marks the 50th vintage of Moss Wood's Cabernet is made up of 94% Cabernet Sauvignon, 4% Cab Franc, and 1% Petit Verdot. It was matured in 228 litre French oak barrels (16% new).

"In summary, what do we make of the 2022 Moss Wood Cabernet Sauvignon, the 50th vintage of this wine? Given the milestone, we’re happy and just a bit relieved we’ve been able to deliver a year with all the classic features of the style. The warm season ensured consistent ripeness, so the wine displays the vineyard’s typically dark fruit aromas and the palate certainly has the expected key feature of concentrated but balanced tannin, all enhanced by the prettier fragrances which we attribute to the cooler final weeks in March. Very few have been better."

Nose: Bright and lifted aromatics with intense dark fruits of mulberry, blackberry, blueberry and plum. These fruit notes then give way to tobacco leave, cigar box, sage and bay leaf. The oak is subtle and integrated with notes of vanilla bean, cinnamon and cedar.
Palate: The palate is dense and rich in all of the Cabernet fruit spectrum- blackberry, blueberry, red currants and black cherry. Fresh acidity and violets sit in behind this as well as background notes of nutmeg, clove and earth. Tannins are dense, mouth coating and velvet-like with subtle, dusty oak notes on the finish.
Cellaring:
There is no doubt the 2022 vintage takes its place among the finest Moss Wood Cabernet Sauvignons, and we have high expectations for its cellaring potential. Thanks to the season’s balance of power and elegance, along with moderate yields, this wine possesses the structure and depth to age gracefully.
We anticipate that a minimum of 10 years will be required to see the first signs of bottle development, with further complexity—cedar, earth, and classic aged Cabernet characters—emerging between 15 and 20 years. However, for those with patience, full maturity will take at least 25 years, and we expect this wine to evolve beautifully for 40 years or more.

Planted in 1969, Moss Wood is a founding estate of the Margaret River wine region of Western Australia. Grapes were first planted on the estate in 1969 and Keith Mugford took over the estate in 1985. To this day, Moss Wood is considered one of the best growers and winemakers in the wine region, which itself is considered one of the premier wine regions of Australia.
The Estate property was first planted with Cabernet Sauvignon followed by Semillion and Pinot Noir. The Ribbon Vale property was acquired in 2000 is planted with Sauvignon Blanc, Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot and Cabernet Franc vines.
Keith and his wife, Clare, have developed the vineyard and utilized their wine-making skill to consistently produce wines of great finesse and lasting capability.

Established in 1969, Moss Wood is an important, founding estate of the Margaret River wine region in the northern sub–region of Wilyabrup, Western Australia. Clare & Keith Mugford, as winemakers, viticulturalists & proprietors, have been making wine & tending the vineyard at Moss Wood since 1984 & 1979, respectively. Their exacting viticulture ensures the production of high-quality fruit, and they have created a stable of fine wines distinguished by their consistency over each vintage, along with their ability to age superbly.
They have put significant effort into developing an appropriate style for each of their wines, but Cabernet Sauvignon, their first wine, is still the primary focus. Naturally, they looked to the great wines of Bordeaux for inspiration and carefully examined the factors that have made Bordeaux the benchmark for Cabernet Sauvignon.
As they were making wine in Margaret River inspired by those of the Medoc, they felt it was important to consider the Bordeaux environment as opposed to Margaret River’s individualistic climate and terroir. Wine writer Jancis Robinson has called them the Chateau Latour of Australia, and, we might add, for a fraction of what Latour costs.

The 2020 Vintage of Moss Wood's venerable Cabernet Sauvignon is comprised of 90% Cabernet Sauvignon, 7% Petit Verdot, and 3% Cabernet Franc.

All d’Arenberg estate owned and leased vineyards are ACO Certified for organic and biodynamic processes. This natural and environmentally friendly philosophy encourages strong root systems that penetrate the soil, resulting in lively tannin structures. From entry level to iconic, all d’Arenberg wines have been basket pressed, reds and whites, with all red ferments foot trod during fermentation. Small batches of grapes are gently crushed, then transferred to five tonne headed-down open fermenters, all batches remain separate until final blending. The red wines are foot trod two thirds of the way through fermentation, and then basket pressed. These practices also ensure that yields are kept low with concentrated flavours and excellent natural acidity.

The 2022 Vintage of Ribbon Vale Cabernet Sauvignon is made from 90% Cabernet Sauvignon along with 2.5% each Merlot, Cab Franc, Malbec, and Petit Verdot.
This wine is from Moss Wood Winery's second vineyard site called the Ribbon Vale. This vineyard is slightly higher elevation than the original one with aspects to the South and West. This makes for longer time for grapes to ripen and a cooler climate.
This wine is complex with an outstanding elegance. It pairs fantastically with food but is also subtle enough to drink on its own. If you are looking for the perfect pairing a lovely tender rib steak would make this gem of a wine shine!
