Founded in 1866, this is a family-owned and operated winery with some of the oldest and rarest vines in the world. Shiraz, Cabernet and Riesling are their specialties and they also produce small-parcel wines that are available taste and purchase at our cellar door should you decide to visit. Best’s Concongella Vineyard is home to Henry Best’s original Nursery Block, containing almost 40 different varieties as well as the 1868 plantings of Shiraz and Pinot Meunier. The vineyard was planted in 1970, making it "young" by Beat's standards. 2021 was an excellent season with near perfect growing conditions right through to harvest. Adequate winter and spring rainfalls set the wines up to burst into life and sustain beautifully balanced growth throughout the summer. Autumn was ideal with little rainfall and warm conditions to ensure the grapes matured gracefully.

Crunchy red fruits with a smooth and velvety finish. Good to drink in the short term but it should age well for 10 years or more. Try it with seared tuna, roast chicken or pork. Serve it lightly chilled in the summer months.

Best's Wines was established in 1866 by the pioneering Henry Best then sold to his neighbour Frederick Thomson in 1920. It's run by the Thomson family in the best tradition! Brooding spice and clove characters on the nose with red fruits nestled amongst subtle complexities and a touch of restrained oak. Great depth of flavor. Deep, rich with a long finish showing fine tannins.

Sourced from a single vineyard on the Concongella estate planted in 1992, the White Gravels Hill Shiraz produces delightfully spicy and aromatic wines. White quartz gravel lay over the granite bedrock and the site can be particularly hard to farm, especially in dry years due to its free-draining nature. Small parcels of fruit from this vineyard are carefully selected to use in the final blend. This wine was produced using traditional methods including hand picking, whole bunch open fermentation and basket pressing.

The story of Bests' begins in 1866 when Henry Best purchased 30 hectares of land in the small town of Great Western, 230km Northwest of Melbourne in New South Wales. It was a property named Concongella, and the goal was to produce world-class wines that would compete with those from France. Fast forward to 1920 when Frederick P Thomson signs a contract of sale with Charles and Joseph Best (Henry Best’s sons), to purchase the Concongella Vineyard. The winery continued to evolve, planting whatever grapes were in fashion, all the while discovering the concept of terroir. By the turn of the century, Syrah is being touted as Australia's adopted grape child, and the varietal thrives over much of Australia's wine regions. In the 1980s the Syrah-based wines are often referred to as Hermitage but the French put an end to that outside of France. Hermitage became known as Shiraz., drawing the name from what is thought to be the grape's Persian origins in Shiraz, Iran. Meanwhile Bests' continues to evolve, acquiring more vineyards and establishing itself as one of Austalia's preeminent Shiraz producers. In 2012 their Bin 1 Shiraz won the Jimmy Watson Memorial Trophy at the Royal Melbourne Wine Show, Australia's most prestigious wine award.
