One of the wonderful aspects of Domaine du Comte Armand is the family’s habit since 1985 of placing their trust in surprisingly youthful talent. Their instincts have been remarkable. Between Pascal Marchand and Paul Zinetti was Benjamin Leroux, who was handed the reins of the domaine in 1999, at the age of 24. Ben stayed at Comte Armand for fifteen vintages and started his side project in 2007. Though there are no family vineyards, he now vinifies approximately 30 hectares, 8 of which are domaine holdings that are farmed organically and biodynamically. His range of appellations is astounding. It spans the Côte from Chassagne-Montrachet to Gevrey-Chambertin and includes all levels in Burgundy’s hierarchy. Particular favourites of ours are his collection of premier crus, not only because many of them are the most prized, but sometimes precisely because of the opposite.

Today, Sébastien Odoul continues this legacy, drawing from his extensive experience at acclaimed Burgundy producers such as Domaine Dujac, and Domaine Thierry Mortet. These prestigious experiences deeply informed his winemaking approach, balancing tradition with contemporary techniques. In 2004, Sébastien returned to the family estate to work alongside his parents, Sylvette and Thierry, before taking over as winemaker in 2009.

"The 2018 Charmes-Chambertin Grand Cru was also showing very well, offering up an expressive bouquet of ripe cherries, cassis, warm spices and rich soil tones. On the palate, the wine is full-bodied, supple and textural, with a broad attack, good depth and energy at the core, powdery structuring tannins and a sapid finish."

The 2019 Clerget Volnay is matured in 20% new oak and is completely de-stemmed. It offers darker fruit compared to the Volnay Village with raspberry wild strawberry and cranberry. Hints of briary and sous-bois develop in the glass. The palate is medium-bodied with a vibrant element of blood orange suffusing the bright red fruit with a slightly chalky textured finish. Very good tension throughout this Volnay that should give 15-20 years of drinking pleasure. (Drink between 2022-2040).
