Under the watchful eye of the previous owners, Bruichladdich put a lot of spirit into very interesting (and ridiculously high end) wine casks. It only makes sense that we're starting to see a we smattering of these 'way out there' single casks hitting the market. But where once the shelves sagged under the weight of Bruichladdich one-and-dones, now we have to wait patiently for bottlers like R&BT to give us a peek at unique single cask Laddies. Great age and great drinking strength on this ex-wine cask matured Islay malt.
Natural colour, non-chill filtered, and bottled at 52.2% abv. 87.25pts Whiskybase
700 mlAndrew's Tasting Note
Nose: a fresh bag of jujubes, fig jam, and Marocan marmalade; loads of spice: fennel, clove, and anise; candied nuts and Raisin Bran cereal with whole milk, and a few extra scoops of raisins.
Palate: thick, sweet, and coating, with warming spice, and loads of dried and candied fruits; salted caramel, Manuka honey, more marmalade, and fig jam; cinnamon and ginger add to the fennel, clove, and anise from the nose; chocolate, leather, tobacco, and smoked cedar; candied nuts, sour plums, and bitter orange; and still a bit of Raisin Bran with whole milk.
Finish: long, warming, and spicy, with more fruits, chocolate, leather and tobacco.
Comment: this could easily be mistaken for ex-sherry, rather than ex-wine; I'm not usually a wine cask guy, but I like this one, and I expect a lot of Bruichladdich fans will too!
