In 2016, Silvio Jermann was crowned best representative winemaker of Italian white wines in the world. The election took place in Rome under the aegis of Gambero Rosso by the most authoritative journalists of the greatest newspapers and magazines. The outcome was not by chance or even unexpected. The Alois Lageder winery in Alto Adige comprises fifty-five hectares of the family's own vineyards, which are managed on the basis of biodynamic principles. Their roots go back to 1823 when the young craftsman Johann Lageder set himself up as a wine merchant in Bolzano. His successors started to produce their own wines and acquired a number of vineyards. Alois III, the great-grandson of the founder of the business, saw the variety of climate zones in Alto Adige as one of the region’s strengths and in 1934 purchased the Löwengang wine estate in Magrè, in the southern part of Alto Adige. Soon smaller winegrowers also began to supply him with grapes. When Alois III died unexpectedly in 1963, Alois IV was only 12 years old. His wife Christiane and his eldest daughter Wendelgard accordingly managed the inheritance on an interim basis. Then, since the middle of the 1970s, Alois IV - together with his sister and her husband and oenologist Luis von Dellemann – set about repositioning the winery with a strict focus on quality and innovative methods in the vineyard and cellar. Today, the 50-hectare family-owned vineyards are farmed biodynamically.

Graziano Prà had a calling to become a vine grower, and it is a road he followed with commitment and honesty: from the family vineyards, managed by his grandfather and father, to his training as an oenologist. The true change came in the Eighties, when the establishment of the company f.lli Prà began to take place. The company was initially run by Graziano and his brother, who worked in the vineyard. In 2007, however, Graziano became the sole owner, under his direction the company grew and the territories – Monte Grande (the company cru), Monte Bisson in Soave, and Morandina in Valpolicella – became more important. Today they are in the top tier of wines from the Veneto, second (or third) only to Quintarelli and Dal Forno.

"Feudi di Romans is a winery located on the Isonzo plain in Friuli. The vines for this wine are grown in vineyards on the left bank of the Isonzo River, which is closer to the sea. This proximity provides a benefit of warm breezes from the Adriatic Sea combined with cool Alpine breezes from the Carnic and Julian Alps. This is a kind of natural air conditioning process that gives Friulan wines, particularly the white ones, great character. The result is that the grapes tend to ripen slowly and evenly," according to the importer. Agricola La Monacesca is located in the commune of Matelica, about 4 kilometres from the centre of town, in the Monacesca contrada, along the state highway that leads to Fabriano. The area where we they located owes its name to the settlement, around 900AD, to a small band of Benedictine monks from the monastery of Farfa who fled northern Italy under the scourge of the Lombards. They decided to stay in this out-of-the-way place, and built a small church and a monastery (today perfectly restored and now part of the winery’s borgo, or hamlet); thus this splendid area took the name of Monacesca over time. The name became the winery brand-name too in 1966, when Casimiro Cifola, having purchased the farm properties, began planting the first vineyards and built the first wine cellar. 1973 saw the release of their first Verdicchio di Matelica. This signalled the departure point for an extraordinary adventure. Starting in 1982, Casimiro was joined by his son Aldo, the current director of the winery; he gave his support to efforts to further increase, through technical means, efforts focused on drawing out the qualities inherent in to Verdicchio.
