Finally! A peated American whiskey that works! This is a four-year-old straight rye that has been recasked in peat-cold-smoked barrels to bring another dimension to the sweet and spicy distillate. These experiments can often yield results that seem a little...disjointed. This, however, is one of the very few exceptions. Mash bill: 95% rye / 5% malted barley. 52.5%.

Producer Tasting Note
Nose: The nose is full of vanilla and caramel sweetness with underlying notes of rye and spice.
Palate: Once on the palate, the sweetness delicately fades to subtle hints of fire roasted peat.
Finish: A delicate fade to subtle hints of fire roasted peat gives this whiskey a delightful Scotch-like finish.

This Single Malt Whisky from Cotswolds Distillery was aged in ex-peated quarter casks (hmm, which distillery could those be from...). The peated casks lend nuance and, well, notes of peat to the unpeated Cotswolds Whisky.
Quarter casks, to be exact. These 125-litre casks typically offer big flavour and influence on the maturing whisky within a shorter amount of time when compared to a full-size 200 Litre Barrel or 250 Litre Hogshead. Big wood influence, yeah, but don't expect this to be a peat monster, by any means.
It's also pretty cool that this is all floor-malted local barley (Anchor and Fermentis varieties). Love the 'grain to glass' ethos!

A bigger, bolder version of the Buzzard's Roost Small Batch Rye. They say only the best of their barrels get called up to the big leagues for this release. And when you taste it, you can see what they mean. Matured for 4 years before being bottled at 57%. Mashbill: 95% rye / 5% malted barley.

This Straight Rye has lain in Char #1 barrels for at least 3 years (so...3 years) before it ever meets a bottle. When KWM Team Whisk(e)y tasted through the Buzzard's Roost range a couple weeks back, we were all blown away and immediately said yes to bringing in the entire range that was being offered to us. Another Buzzard's Roost rye we simply had to have. I'm almost scared to utter the words 'toasted barrel' anymore, as we've all seen the feeding frenzy that ensues as soon as those words are strung together and stuck on the front of a bottle of whiskey. The real key here isn't that the barrels are toasted, but that they're not charred. Look for warm woody (and slightly smoky) tones with this one. Mashbill: 95% rye / 5% malted barley. 52.5%
