If you're a fan of big, rich Napa Valley oaked Chardonnay and looking for more elegance and oak integration, this is the wine for you. Although Tether might not be as recognizable in Canada as some of the other famous Napa Chard labels, this is a small production winery to watch for (only 582 cases produced)! The Tether Chardonnay is full-bodied and balanced with a never-ending finish. The wine spends 17 months in French oak, creating notes of toasted coconut and lots of texture. Easy pairing with Fish & Chips, seafood in a rich butter or cream sauce, polenta, and especially with steak (with sauteed mushrooms) & lobster (with warm butter).

Founded in 1866, Bests' is a family-owned and operated winery with some of the oldest and rarest vines in the world. One of the great things about this Great Western Chard is the fact that the grapes come from some of the earliest plantings of Chardonnay in Australia. They are grown on a deep gravel hill with a west-facing slope and what this means is low yields and great intense flavors. After pressing, the wine spent 8 months in 30% new French oak barriques and achieved 30% malolactic fermentation with plenty of lees contact to encourage a rich, complex and textured wine. Aromas of flint and stone fruit are followed by rich and complex notes on the palate yet it remains elegant and subtle.

The review: "There are over 8,000 cases of the outstanding 2012 Chardonnay Cross Barn, which offers plenty of orange marmalade, lemon oil and white peach aromas. This steel-fermented, primarily stainless steel-aged Chardonnay (12-15% oak was employed) went through 100% malolactic fermentation. Crisp, fresh and steely, it comes across like a California version of a French Chablis with a richer, more tropical personality. It is a big-time winner as well as a great value. Enjoy it over the next 3-4 years." As for the name Crossbarn, it comes from the winemaker's childhood. "The 'cross barn' was nestled in the middle of our one hundred fifty year old family farm in upstate New York."
