In 2013, husband and wife team Chris and Andrea Mullineux (they own the Mullineux winery in Swartland that they founded in 2007) partnered with Analjit Singh (BAS) and started the Leeu Passant winery on Analjit’s stunning Leeu Estates in Franschhoek. Leeu Passant is focused on expressing the South African landscape and climate as well as celebrating South African winemaking and viticultural heritage by working with some of the Cape’s oldest and most exciting vineyards.
The Mullineuxs set out with a shared vision to create fine wines that reflect the distinct terroir of the area while embracing reasoned, sustainable farming practices and modern minimalist winemaking. This stellar South African Cabernet Sauvignon is harvested from three vineyards in some of the cooler parts of the Stellenbosch region. The wine naturally ferments and is aged for 20 months in 500-litre French oak casks (30% new) before bottling. If you're looking for a substitute for a really good bottle of Napa cab, this fits the bill.

Graceland is a family run boutique winery, specialising in red wine. Susan, the driving force behind the winery, takes on the roles of marketer, winemaker and viticulturist whilst Paul attends to the farm. The Graceland wine making philosophy starts in the vineyard where no insecticides are used and minimal spraying. Special attention is paid to pruning, canopy cover and limiting production in line with producing top quality grapes. The most important decision each year is when to pick and this is done in small batches according to the microclimate which determines when each row becomes optimally ripe. As to winemaking, they are very natural in our approach. Only grapes and nitrogen. Our sulphur dioxide levels are considerably lower than average.The grapes are de-stemmed into open fermenters. The skins are hand plunged 4 times per day. After 8 days the wine is pressed; pressed wine and free run are combined. It is then racked to oak barrels where malolactic fermentation takes place. The above techniques are geared towards low intervention with the use of oxidative rackings as a key feature. The oxidation causes unstable colour, tannin and flavour to polymerize and “drop out of the wine”. It also eliminates off odours. The resulting wines only have stable constituents left which means the wines will age well, probably 7 - 10 years. In summary, these wines are big and flavoursome with good tannin structures.

A true Napa Cabernet! This wine is an explosion of character, with elements of wild summer berries, pepper, a touch of oak spices, and a smooth, lingering finish. It's smooth, yet bold, and is just simply an incredible bottle of wine. We would recommend ageing this wine for 5 or so years, but it's also delightful now. We would recommend serving this wine with a beef dish that been cooked low and slow (something like stew), or with a beautiful Brisket.

One of the greatest things about the Great Western wine region is its ability to successfully grow a broad range of grape varieties. Shiraz may be the regional hero, but Cabernet Sauvignon from the area can lay almost equal claim. Best’s Great Western 2021 Cabernet Sauvignon is a fine example of the Great Western Regional style; supple tannins with dark cherry, cassis, confection and cinnamon spice. With small amounts of Cabernet Franc and Merlot, this vintage Cabernet is a delight to drink now, but will certainly gain more complexity over the years.
