2018 Furmint “vom Kalk” reminds me a lot of the dry Furmint "om Somló. If I did not know better, I would say that this wine tastes like Hungary. A touch of cinnamon on the nose, floral of white flowers, "esh limes. Nothing exuberant, nothing bawling. Pure happiness on the palate, finely structured, salty, crisp acidity, precise and clear, like a mountain creek. Again subtle cinnamon notes, citrus potpourri. With its 9.5 alk, it is lightweight, delicate, almost "agile. Grandiose wine. (Risto Rieger) Natural, Vegan, Organic.

Franz Weninger took over his father's estate in 2011. He is obessed with biodynamics and Revitalizing traditional varietals of Blaufrankish and Furmint.He is a fascinating wine grower working on two sides of the Burgenland border in both Austria and Hungary.
Some of the vineyards are located at the southern end of the Neusiedlersee in Burgenland which permitted them to purchase land across the border in Hungary. The Sopron region was once part of Burgenland and contains some of their favorite sites. Including Steiner vineyard which is the best in western Hungary.
The Rotburger is super juicy and fresh red fruited. Super easy to crush at only 11.5% ABV!

"This wine is made exclusively from Furmint grown in Tokaj, North-Eastern Hungary. The organically farmed vines are 45 years old. The grapes are crushed by foot before being whole-cluster pressed into a combination of stainless steel and Hungarian oak puncheon. After a short élevage the wine is racked and bottled." "This incredibly unique site represents the western most point in central-Burgenland. At 350m above sea level, it is their coldest parcel. Kalkofen was once used to produce quick lime thanks to its calcareous Eurendsina soils. Because of the sites ability to retain acidity, and its relatively cool mesoclimate, the grapes can be harvested quite late. They were de-stemmed into open top wooden vat and fermented on skins for two weeks. The wine was then pressed off into puncheon for nearly two years." - Juice Imports
