This Tomintoul 16 Year Old was featured on Day 2 of our 2021 KWM Whisky Calendar.
Tomintoul is one of the many Scottish distilleries that used to tack on the name Glenlivet to its distillery name as a sign of quality. Fittingly it is only a few miles from the fabled Glen. Its 16 year is a soft, easy-going and pleasant expression that was matured in American Oak casks.
700 mlEvan’s Tasting Note
Nose: Apple crumble, poached pears and peaches, cinnamon coffee cake, a mug of hot cocoa with whipped cream on top, and a mossy forest floor.
Palate: Chocolate-coated almonds, Neopolitan ice cream, a London Fog Latte, cinnamon shortbread cookies, graham crackers, and a trail mix full of roasted peanuts, sunflower seeds, a few raisins and bits of dark chocolate..
Finish: The chocolate and nutty notes stick around. Toasty and roasted to the end.
Comment: It has been a while since I have tasted the Tomintoul 16 and it is richer, more roasted and more nutty than I remember. Surprisingly well put together and not weak like I expected it to be at 40%. Not anemic at all.
Producer Tasting Note
Nose: Creamy and sweet with aromas of heather honey, soft nougat, vanilla fudge and toasted brioche with lemon zest highlights.
Palate: Nutty and well-rounded with layers of creme bruless and boiled sweets mingled with touches of mocha and amoretti biscuit.
Finish: Mellow and warming with notes of shortbread, cinnamon icing and brittle toffee lingering on the tongue.
