What is Single Pot Still Irish Whiskey you ask? It is whiskey made using a combination of malted and unmalted barley. Why do this you ask? Why, to dodge unfair taxation, of course! The Malt Tax came into being in Ireland for a short time starting in 1785, enforced by the (insert expletive said in your best Irish accent here) English. The Irish, being Irish, decided that they didn't need to use malted barley for the entirety of the mash used to distill whiskey and started adding portions of unmalted barley. Necessity being the mother of invention, this eventually became a legitimate style of whiskey-making that is now not just celebrated but codified into law in Ireland with the Single Pot Still Irish Whiskey classification.
About Powers Whiskey
Powers Distillery was founded new Dublin's Wester Gate in 1791 on John's Lane. In 1841 Sir John Power was made a Baron. In 1871 the distillery went through an enormous expansion. In 1886 the distillery became the first in Dublin to bottle its whiskey. In 1975 the distillery, owned by Irish Distillers, is closed down with production shifting to the New Middleton Distillery in Cork, along with all other Irish whiskey brands save Bushmills.

Producer's Tasting Note
Nose: Pot Still spice combines with crisp barley character. Delicate herbs give way to green banana and grapefruit while a nutty note of marzipan reflects the wood contribution of specially selected casks.
Taste: In true Pot Still style, an initial taste delivers smooth mouth-coating barley followed by an eruption of green apple and citrus notes. Herbs and spicy flavour are complemented by a touch of cedar wood for extra complexity.
Finish: Spicy sweetness gives way to Pot Still barley character balanced with a hint of sherry and leading to a crisp cereal finish with toasted oak notes.

This 7 Year Old Single Pot Still Irish Whiskey is exclusive to Canada (read: Alberta, generally). It was finished in a Spinola Bodega PX cask and bottled at 54% ABV. It is dubbed the Canada Cloud Cask and is a collaboration between Two Stacks, PWS Imports, Dark Cloud Whisky, and Jeremy Pue (White Cloud Productions).

Teeling does cask finished Irish Whiskey well, and the small-batch is no exception. Finished for up to a year in Rum Casks, it definitely has a good amount of rum influence on this bottle. 46% ABV.
