Originally from France but almost forgotten on its home turf, Carmenere has been reinvented in Chile. This big boastful red starts out with aromas of sage, blueberry, and blackberry and toasty oak. According to Robert Parker, it borders on opulent. A full-throttle red, layered with succulent flavours, and a long, pure finish. A Purple Angel indeed!

Alberto Siegel and his father founded Viña Siegel in 1980. They started planting vineyards in Colchagua, eventually building a winery in Santa Cruz after years of selling bulk wine to large producers. The Colchagua Valley is located in the Central Zone of Chile. It's a 'transverse valley", which means that it is a valley formed by a river, in this case, the Tinguiririca, running east-to-west towards the ocean. The valley cuts out at a ridge or mountain at right angles. The Colchagua Valley is the leading fine-wine-producing region in Chile. In the Mapuche language, Ketran means “land ploughed by the fire resulting from volcanic activity.” This wine is born out of the inspiration of the volcanic soils that give birth to the vineyards in Los Lingues at the foot of the Cordillera de Los Andes, high Colchagua. It offers black fruit, mocha, toast, and spice with firm, chewy tannins. The wine will continue to improve with time in the cellar. It's a blend of 35% Syrah, 30% Petit Verdot, 25% Carmenere, and 10% Cabernet Franc grown on colluvial soil, clay, and a decomposition of volcanic rock. It's hand-picked, and aged in French oak barrels and left to age for 30 months and then another 12 months in bottle before release.

Their childhood and their home were always connected to a sensorial world, with aromas, ingredients and flavours that, over time, motivated them to choose the path to become enologists. As adults, they would find these familiar memories and similar passions. In 2002 they dedicated their efforts to the creation of a small family winey. Today the brothers have evolved to form a new generation of winemakers, leading an evolutionary change in Argentina’s viticulture. Their range includes the value-driven Abeja wines and the upper-tier Las Compuertas offerings produced from the oldest vineyard sites.
This blend is created from the best varieties of the old vineyards at Finca Victoria. The result is the purest expression of the Las Compuertas terroir. It is a celebration of life, paying homage to Héctor and Pablo Durigutti’s mother, Victoria. A delicious blend of 40% Malbec, 30% Cabernet Franc, 27% Petit Verdot, and 3% Cordisco. The vines date from 1914 and after a double grape selection, they are fermented and aged in second use 600 Litre French Oak Barrels for 12 months and then cement eggs for another 26 months.

Matilde is the flagship wine of this up-and-coming Argentine venture and precious little is produced. Sourced from the same estate vineyard with vines dating back to 1929, Matilde spends 24 months in new French oak. This loaded effort displays more obvious (but well-integrated) oak. This is an unctuous and silky red with a long finish. In the nose, aromas of vanilla, white chocolate, mocha, and tobacco combine with ripened fruit, blackcurrant, and plum. Food pairings? Big red meats!
