This 8 Year Old Single Malt Whisky from Saskatchewan's Last Mountain Distillery spent time in casks that previously held peated Islay whisky before being bottled at 51.34%.

"Baldur’s Release No.008 is a bold and expressive single malt, crafted from 100% malted barley and patiently matured for eight years. It begins its journey in a once-used bourbon cask, developing a foundation of soft vanilla, golden toffee, and honeyed malt before being finished in an Islay cask, where it takes on a distinctive coastal character."

Nose: On the nose, gentle waves of peat smoke rise alongside notes of caramelized sugar, toasted oak, and a subtle salinity reminiscent of ocean air.
Palate: The palate opens with a smooth sweetness - honey, vanilla, and malted biscuit - before evolving into layers of smoky depth, charred wood, and a touch of brine. Hints of dried fruit and baking spice add complexity, while the influence of the Islay cask brings a lingering, earthy smokiness.
Finish: The finish is long and warming, with soft peat smoke, sea salt, and a delicate sweetness that slowly fades, leaving a balanced and memorable impression.

Amber Mountain is the third release so far from the Maligne Range Series. Like the Tekarra and Excelsior that preceded it, Amber Mountain also takes its name from a mountain in the Maligne Range, which is in Jasper National Park. The whisky is a blend of malted barley distilled at Calgary's Last Best and mature 100% unmalted rye whisky from an undisclosed Alberta Distillery. Hmm... Batch 01 was bottled on July 21st, 2024 and bottled at 46%.

"The Watchtower is The Maligne Range’s interpretation of a peated Canadian whisky – bringing together Canadian and Scottish traditions without adhering too closely to either. Built Canadian malt with 30% heavily peated Scottish malt, it introduces smoke with intent – layered, controlled, and integrated into the structure of the whisky, with notes of soft smoke, and apple, citrus, and dark caramel carried through with clarity.
Process and maturation bring the elements into alignment. Blending is approached with restraint, allowing the peat to remain present without overwhelming the foundation. The result is a whisky where smoke adds depth and contrast, supported by grain and structure rather than dominating it.
