This mystery Orkney malt, bottled under the Old Orkney label, was distilled in 2005, and bottled at 58.7% after 19 years in a Refill Hogshead cask. Almost certainly Highland Park!
Producer Description
"A special bottling of Old Orkney malt whisky, selected to celebrate the 10th anniversary of our friends at Heads & Tails Spiriits and the official opening of Boutique Audio Gallery. This is a straight up, single cask, cask strength Orcadian malt whisky distilled in 2005 and bottled without any interference whatsoever. It's a whisky for distillate geeks, for lovers of old school spirits and for audiophiles who like something pure, potent and dazzling to sip while they listen in granular detail to their favourite recording artist taking subtle intakes of breath."
700 mlAndrew's Tasting Note
Nose: dusty, coastal, and faintly decadent; assorted hard fruit candies in an open bowl, mainly citrus & berry, the kind you had to chisel apart with a pointy object at Granny's house; paraffin tape and it might be the label, but am I getting some vinyl too? a hint of honey, lightly salted caramel, and a whiff of clean smoke..
Palate: honeyed, malty, and waxy, with a puff of clean smoke and more of Granny's slightly stale, stuck together, hard fruit candies; a touch of tart oak complements waxy honeycomb; more paraffin tape and that vinyl note, tastes more like bus vinyl than an LP... I assume, can't say I've ever had either in my mouth...; nutty with brittle old malt and building earthy peat; faint smoke drifts into the finish with late spice.
Finish: fresh, fruity, and earthy; it is a little honeyed, with a coastal flair, and coating waxy oils.
Comment: this is somehow both rather naked and simultaneously fresh; it is also vaguely Highland Park-esque, without being obviously from that oldest of Orkney distilleries; a unique and lovely malt, but a little too much vinyl for my palate... I am more of a podcast guy!
