Evan deserves the credit for sleuthing out this new KWM exclusive Campbeltown Blended Malt. We tried a sample early in the fall, and were suitably impressed by it for the price. 10 years of age and 50.7%.
If the rumours can be believed, the whisky is a marriage of Springbank from 1994 and 2015, with Glen Scotia from 1992. But true to form the chap at North Star Spirits has little to say about it on the record, the official product description "Our own mix of Springbank, Glen Scotia, and other Campbeltown Malts" seemingly raises more questions than it answers.
But perhaps this is a time to not look the proverbial gift horse in the mouth. We have here a 10 year old Campbeltown Blended Malt at just over 50%, with a beautiful label, and the price is very reasonable!
700 mlAndrew's Tasting Note
Nose: creamy, malty, and fruity with a dash of that Campbeltown funk; melons and lemon peel, with slightly stale cherry Nibs; gristy malt, salted licorice, and a touch cheesy/lactic; a touch of muddy peat, faint smoke, and a freshly hayed horse stable; white chocolate.
Palate: this is where it really shines: malty, creamy, and fruity with more lightly peated Campbeltown funk; the gristy barley adds a nice flinty minerality, classic Springbank mouthfeel; the lactic tones are leading in the direction of Comté; apples, melons, and just a hint of kiwi; more of that freshly hayed horse stable, muddy peat, and light but firm smoke.
Finish: bright, fruity, and malty with fading sweet smoke and a dash of funk.
Comment: this is at once very Springbank like, but the splash of older Springbank and Glen Scotia give it a unique vibe; this lovely malt will please fans of Campbeltown malts, and really anyone who loves great whisky at reasonable prices; and it has a train on the label... who doesn't love trains!
Producer Tasting Note
Nose: caramelised grapefruits and fresh vanilla pods.
Palate: salty and waxy, the slight peat makes in big in the mouth.
Finish: warm citrus orange, with a wee bit of parafin for good measure.
